Why

whatsmeow encrypts every message with the Signal protocol, but the Rust
port (layer 1) only defines the Signal traits. This layer supplies the
real implementation on Signal's own libsignal, plus a fake WhatsApp
server so the client can be exercised end to end with real cryptography.

What

  • crates/whatsmeow_signal: sessions, ratchets, sender keys, session and
    group ciphers built on libsignal-core (curve25519 and XEdDSA); storage
    and wire protos. One Libsignal type implements both whatsmeow traits.
  • Interop: testdata/interop_transcript.json is produced by whatsmeow's Go
    libsignal (testdata/generator); the Go-oracle test is #[ignore]d in CI
    because it needs Go. tests/client_end_to_end.rs runs the real client
    against fake phones with real crypto.
  • crates/whatsapp_fake_server: fake WhatsApp server, phones, media and
    stanza handling for client and service tests.
  • deny.toml: allows AGPL-3.0-only for libsignal-core/libsignal-debug
    (the same license as this repository). Nix output hash for the libsignal
    git dependency.
  • Regenerated Cargo.lock, workspace-hack and dependency closures.

Stack

WhatsApp linked devices, one layer per PR. Merge bottom-up; each PR is based on the one below it, so its diff is only its own layer. The layers are a single linear chain (layer 3 does not depend on 1–2, but a second base would make the stack harder to merge). Built from wolf/whatsmeow-rs rebased onto main; the whole stack equals that branch except main-merge resolutions, regenerated files, re-timestamped migrations, native version bumps and CI fixes (GraphQL compatibility in layer 4; ast-grep, import order and the Darwin node_modules hash in layer 8; e2e Postgres connection use in layer 9).

The new WhatsApp client can stall all outgoing messages when the server never acknowledges a send, because the default send waits indefinitely. Privacy-setting events and the settings cache can also return stale or empty values, and stalled media hosts can hang downloads. Fix the default send timeout before merging. The smaller logging, tracing and receipt issues can follow.

186-212: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Track the writer task on shared.tasks.

tokio::spawn starts the writer outside the server's TaskTracker. On shutdown, FakeWhatsApp::start drops the serve future through its select!. When that happens, writer.abort() (Line 261) and shared.connection_closed (Line 260) never run.

The connection's outbound sender stays in state.connections. The writer keeps the websocket sink open until the last Arc<Shared> drops. Test phones hold Arc<Shared>, so the client side does not see a close after FakeWhatsApp::shutdown. shutdown().await also returns before this task ends.

Spawn the writer on shared.tasks and stop it on shared.cancel.

♻️ Proposed change
-    let writer = tokio::spawn(async move {
+    let cancel = shared.cancel.clone();
+    let writer = shared.tasks.spawn(async move {
         let _done = writer_guard;
         let mut counter = 0u32;
-        while let Some(item) = outbound_queue.recv().await {
+        loop {
+            let item = tokio::select! {
+                () = cancel.cancelled() => {
+                    let _ = sink.close().await;
+                    break;
+                }
+                item = outbound_queue.recv() => item,
+            };
+            let Some(item) = item else { break };
             match item {

Track the writer task in the connection flow by replacing the untracked spawn in
the writer loop with `shared.tasks.spawn`. Make the loop observe `shared.cancel`
and close the sink when cancellation occurs, so the writer exits during shutdown
and `shutdown().await` waits for it to finish.

- Line 199: Update the default `media_http` initialization in
`ClientConfig::default()` to build a single `reqwest::Client` with a connect
timeout and an idle read timeout, without setting a total request timeout. Keep
using this client through `Client::media_http` for media requests.

Review comments at @crates/whatsmeow/src/errors.rs:
- Around line 422-443: Update the `Display` implementation for `IqError` so the
`code == 0` branches never include node XML: report the unknown-error status
when `error_node` is present, and for `raw_node` report only its tag in the
unexpected-response message. Keep the existing fallback message and nonzero
status formatting unchanged.

Review comments at @crates/whatsmeow/src/mediaconn.rs:
- Line 129: Update the tracing warning in the media connection child-handling
code to log the child’s tag rather than formatting the entire node. Keep the
warning message and surrounding behavior unchanged.

Review comments at @crates/whatsmeow/src/notification.rs:
- Around line 388-444: Add tracing instrumentation to handle_notification and
record the parsed notification_type on its span. Ensure futures launched through
self.spawn retain the current notification span so their traces remain connected
to the handler.

Review comments at @crates/whatsmeow/src/privacysettings.rs:
- Around line 194-196: Update handle_privacy_settings_notification so the
PrivacySettingsEvent returned by parse_privacy_settings includes the parsed
settings in new_settings before dispatch. Preserve the existing cache update and
event dispatch flow.
- Around line 151-160: Update the match in set_privacy_setting to assign value
to the cached fields for Messages, Defense, and Stickers, and retain a fallback
only for unknown Other variants. Keep the match exhaustive so any newly added
variant requires explicit handling.

Review comments at @crates/whatsmeow/src/receipt.rs:
- Around line 87-91: Update the loop over participants in the receipt handler to
combine each handle_grouped_receipt result with the existing cancelled value
instead of overwriting it, so an earlier failure remains recorded if a later
handler succeeds.

Review comments at @crates/whatsmeow/src/send.rs:
- Around line 312-326: Update the timeout handling in the send-message ack wait
so `SendRequestExtra::default()` uses `DEFAULT_REQUEST_TIMEOUT` instead of
waiting indefinitely. Preserve support for finite custom timeouts, and provide
an explicit opt-in for waiting forever if `None` is no longer used for that
behavior; update the `SendRequestExtra::timeout` documentation to match.

Give the default media HTTP client timeouts.

ClientConfig::default() sets media_http to reqwest::Client::new(), which has no timeouts. Every download, upload and media delete uses this client through Client::media_http. If a media host accepts the TCP connection but stops sending, the request never returns. Examples are a history sync download in history_sync_notification_loop_inner, or Client::download.

For the history sync loop, one stalled request blocks every later history sync notification. A total timeout can break large uploads, so set a connect timeout and a read (idle) timeout. Build the client once in the default.

Update the default `media_http` initialization in `ClientConfig::default()` to
build a single `reqwest::Client` with a connect timeout and an idle read
timeout, without setting a total request timeout. Keep using this client through
`Client::media_http` for media requests.

Remove node XML from the IqError message.

When code == 0, IqError's Display prints the full <error> node or the full response node. parse_iq_error puts the whole response in raw_node. An IQ response can carry JIDs or phone numbers in attributes, for example in usync or group responses.

ClientError::Iq is #[error(transparent)], so this text becomes the client error message. Many functions have #[tracing::instrument(err)], for example get_group_info, connect and send_app_state. These functions log that text. The crate's own rule explicitly rejects Go's behaviour of formatting node XML and JIDs into error messages.

Print the tag and a status only. Callers that need details can still read error_node and raw_node.

Update the `Display` implementation for `IqError` so the `code == 0` branches
never include node XML: report the unknown-error status when `error_node` is

Log the tag, not the node.

node = %child formats the whole child node as XML through Node's Display. This rule exists to prevent server-sent content from reaching the logs. Log child.tag instead.

Add a span to the notification handler.

handle_notification is the consumer entrypoint for every <notification> stanza. It has no span. These sub-flows run without a span of their own:

  • the inline handlers for devices, w:gp2, picture and privacy_token;
  • the spawned handlers for encrypt, server_sync and account_sync.

When a notification is slow or fails, its trace has no record of it. The repository guidelines treat a queue or stanza consumer without a span as a defect. Async work that outlives the request must also link to the span that started it.

Fix:

  • Add #[tracing::instrument(name = "whatsmeow.notification", skip_all, fields(notification_type))].
  • Record notification_type after you parse it.
  • Make sure that self.spawn runs the future inside the current span, for example with .in_current_span().

As per coding guidelines: "Span the places a trace would otherwise go dark: queue and Kafka consumers, … background jobs" and "Async work that outlives the request (spawned tasks, queued jobs) links to or parents on the span that started it".

Update the cache for every setting type.

The match in set_privacy_setting handles only seven of the ten known variants. Messages, Defense and Stickers fall into _ => {}. The server accepts the change, but the cache keeps the old value. After that, try_fetch_privacy_settings(false) returns the old value until the next full fetch. parse_privacy_settings already handles all ten variants.

Make the match exhaustive. Then a new variant must be handled here too.

Set new_settings on the dispatched event.

parse_privacy_settings starts from PrivacySettingsEvent::default() and only sets the *_changed flags. handle_privacy_settings_notification dispatches that event unchanged. As a result, every Event::PrivacySettings has a new_settings field with all values set to Undefined. A consumer that reads new_settings gets wrong data.

Combine the cancelled results instead of overwriting them.

When a receipt has several <participants> nodes, each loop pass replaces cancelled. If a handler fails for an earlier node and the last node succeeds, cancelled ends as false. finish_deferred_ack then acks the receipt although a handler failed. handle_grouped_receipt already uses || cancelled inside its own loop, so the two loops are inconsistent.

Wait for the ack with a bounded timeout by default.

SendRequestExtra::timeout is Option<Duration>, and None means "wait forever". SendRequestExtra::default() therefore waits forever for the ack. Go uses a zero Timeout as defaultRequestTimeout (75 s). Only a negative timeout waits forever in Go.

Most callers, including the tests, pass SendRequestExtra::default(). Consider a send where the server never acks and the websocket does not drop:

  • The waiter never resolves.
  • _send_lock (message_send_lock) stays held until send_message returns.
  • Every later send_message call then blocks on the queue span with no timeout.

Only a disconnect releases the waiter. Go recovers after 75 s in the same case.

Make the bounded timeout the default. For example:

  • Use timeout: Duration, where zero means DEFAULT_REQUEST_TIMEOUT.
  • Add an explicit opt-in to wait forever.
Proposed fix (keeps `Option`, makes `None` the default timeout)

If you keep this change, update the field doc on SendRequestExtra::timeout. If a caller needs to wait forever, add a separate explicit option.

Review comment at @crates/whatsmeow/src/send.rs around lines 312 - 326:
Update the timeout handling in the send-message ack wait so
`SendRequestExtra::default()` uses `DEFAULT_REQUEST_TIMEOUT` instead of waiting
indefinitely. Preserve support for finite custom timeouts, and provide an
explicit opt-in for waiting forever if `None` is no longer used for that
behavior; update the `SendRequestExtra::timeout` documentation to match.

…bsignal

Why: whatsmeow encrypts every message with the Signal protocol, but the
Rust port only defines the traits. This layer supplies the real
implementation and a fake WhatsApp server so the client can be tested end
to end with real cryptography.

What:
- crates/whatsmeow_signal: sessions, sender keys, group and session
  ciphers on libsignal-core's curve25519/XEdDSA; storage and wire protos;
  interop transcript from whatsmeow's Go libsignal (generator kept under
  testdata/generator) and a real-crypto client end-to-end test.
- crates/whatsapp_fake_server: a fake WhatsApp server with fake phones
  for client and service tests.
- deny.toml: allow libsignal's AGPL-3.0-only license (same license as
  this repository); nix: output hash for the libsignal git dependency.
- Regenerated Cargo.lock and workspace-hack.
