PR Checklist

Fixes #2518.

A component supplied by a file replacement can currently reach a Vite bundle as an uncompiled decorator. The experimental compiler can also return no output during initial compilation, lose HMR updates, or produce unusable library JavaScript. This PR repairs those compiler handoffs and adds installed-package and browser coverage across Vite versions.

This is the compiler foundation requested in Brandon's review of analogjs/analog#2516. The workspace/Vitest upgrade continues separately in analogjs/analog#2508; the SSR, transport, lifecycle, and streaming contributions are separately published and mapped in analogjs/analog#2516.

Review scope and shared prerequisites

The tested SSR route-policy fix from #2523 is included as a shared prerequisite for the existing no-SSR E2E assertion. The compiler implementation and compatibility qualification remain the primary scope.

This PR targets alpha. Shared prerequisite changes are limited to those needed by its build and validation; the main feature changes remain in their own PRs.

The shared route-policy prerequisite also strips caller-supplied x-analog-no-ssr before internal renderer dispatch. analogjs/analog#2523 owns this repair and its tests. The copied regression verifies that caller headers cannot override configured SSR policy, while request URL/query, method/body, runtime context, and cancellation are preserved.

Affected scope

  • Primary scope: vite-plugin-angular.
  • Supporting changes: shared declaration emitter, compiler compatibility/conformance workflows, the Node pin/Nx Agent bootstrap, and the Angular compilation guide.

Recommended merge strategy for maintainer [optional]

  • Squash merge
  • Rebase merge
  • Other

Commit preservation note [optional]

No commit-preservation requirement. The first commit contains failing regression tests against alpha, the second contains the repairs and qualification fixtures, and a CI follow-up repairs existing agent bootstrap prerequisites.

What is the new behavior?

For example, a library can replace a component outside its original TypeScript roots:

angular({
  tsconfig: 'tsconfig.json',
  jit: false,
  fileReplacements: [
    { replace: 'src/original.ts', with: 'src/replacement.ts' },
  ],
});

The resulting bundle contains Angular's AOT defineComponent output. The public regression commit demonstrates the previous decorator output and the related handoff failures.

  • Both compiler paths retain their additional roots. Dependency transforms receive test mode and transformer ownership separately, and transforms wait for active compilation.
  • Experimental HMR shares emitted output with its middleware, invalidates template dependencies, and delivers replacement metadata even when Angular does not re-emit full JavaScript. A real browser verifies that a template edit preserves a counter value in both compiler modes.
  • Vite 6's missing native hook filtering no longer lets the dependency optimizer replace compiled application code with raw TypeScript. TypeScript 5 CommonJS imports also work in the installed package.
  • Experimental library builds preserve JavaScript output; declarations remain a separate build step. Package rebuilds refresh changed type-only declarations. Plugin failures retain their original cause.
  • Shutdown removes watcher callbacks and waits for active compilation before closing its worker. Unavailable experimental APIs fail during configuration with a useful diagnostic.
  • Nx Agents consume the shared Node 24.15.0 pin through .nvmrc and install the workspace's Playwright browsers. The obsolete Cypress install command was failing because Cypress is absent. These bootstrap prerequisites allow this compiler PR to run independently of the later workspace upgrade.

Compilation API availability is verified from the installed @angular/build/private export. In particular, @angular/build@20.1.0 lacks the factory despite the previous version-only message. Its normal and fast compiler paths remain covered; the unsupported opt-in is explicitly tested as a rejection.

Production Environment API builds now retain ngServerMode per environment. A shared esbuild define previously folded the server branch to false on Vite 7 before the server environment's override could apply. The installed consumer includes a client/server output assertion for this case. Repeated environment builds also retain the real incremental TypeScript builder separately from the production diagnostics wrapper; TypeScript 5.4/5.5 otherwise reject the second build with Not implemented.

Test plan

Verified head: e767273de6e3b8589b39c815ccdae4db1a6b7e62; current CI checks. Local qualification used Linux, Node 24.15.0, pnpm 10.33.0, and NX_DAEMON=false NX_NO_CLOUD=true. These are recorded executable results; this description update does not change source.

  • pnpm nx test platform: 396 tests pass after the caller-header repair.
  • pnpm nx lint platform, pnpm nx lint analog-app-e2e, and pnpm nx run analog-app-e2e:typecheck pass.
  • Committed-adapter reproduction invokes SSR with and without the caller hint, matching the preserved integration reference. Request regressions cover GET/HEAD/POST, URL/query, body, custom headers, runtime identity, and abort state/reason.
  • Compiler, conformance, Angular compatibility, nine installed Angular/Vite consumers, browser HMR, Windows, build, and preview CI checks pass.
  • Recorded compiler package qualification: 855 tests, six existing skips, declarations/typecheck, and lint. Compiler source is unchanged by the shared header repair.
  • Changed-file formatting and git diff --check pass.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

  • Yes
  • No

No intended public API removal or workspace-wide toolchain upgrade. The experimental Compilation API now rejects unavailable installations earlier. Experimental library JavaScript remains usable, with declaration generation documented as a separate step.

Other information

Targets upstream alpha, starting from 4225f45090a4cf4bdfb562a788e908787b6ec73c (3.0.0-alpha.86). Compiler fixture source and commands are included in this repository; no private consumer, credentials, or hosted application are required.

Prepared with OpenAI Codex. Findings were checked against source, failing regressions, installed packages, and automated browser behavior.

[optional] What gif best describes this PR or how it makes you feel?

Not applicable.

CI repair follow-up

  • Recompile immediately after tsconfig watcher changes; a regression switches compiler roots and verifies the emitted files refresh.
  • Run Angular 17–19 consumer processes on Node 20.19.5 while keeping workspace Nx builds on Node 24.15.0. Include .node-version in both compiler workflow triggers.
  • Validation: compiler unit tests, declarations and lint pass locally; Angular 17, 18 and 19 consumer smoke tests pass locally and in GitHub Actions.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR adds Angular/Vite compatibility smoke tests across Angular 17–22 and Vite 6–8. It updates the experimental Compilation API lifecycle, compiler-root handling, HMR behavior, incremental builds, declaration rebuilding, and error causes. It adds SSR route-rule precedence and request-preservation tests. It also updates SSR and compiler documentation, workflow triggers, Node version guidance, and shared dependency configuration.

This PR touches multiple package scopes: platform, vite-plugin-angular.

Please confirm the changes are closely related. Squash merge is highly preferred. If you recommend a non-squash merge, add a brief note explaining why the commit boundaries matter and why this PR should bypass focused changes per package.

Restore caller-header filtering from eeda7af.
Preserve Request adapter fields, runtime context and cancellation; verify
configured SSR rules over built HTTP.

The route-policy contribution owns this shared prerequisite for independent
renderer copies in the split.

Based on the official Angular version compatibility documentation, Node.js 24 is not currently listed as a supported version for any of the queried Angular releases [1]. Angular compatibility with Node.js is defined as follows: Angular 17.3.x supports Node.js versions ^18.13.0 and ^20.9.0 [1]. Angular 18.1.x and 18.2.x support Node.js versions ^18.19.1, ^20.11.1, and ^22.0.0 [1]. Angular 19.x (including 19.0.x, 19.1.x, and 19.2.x) supports Node.js versions ^18.19.1, ^20.11.1, and ^22.0.0 [1]. Since Node.js 24 is not included in these ranges, it is not officially supported by these versions of Angular as of September 7, 2026 [1]. Support for newer Node.js releases is typically added in subsequent Angular versions after the Node.js version becomes available.

Run Angular 17–19 consumer slots with supported Node versions.

.node-version selects Node 24.15.0 for every matrix entry. compiler-vite-smoke.mjs starts the fixture with process.execPath, so the fixture also uses Node 24. Angular’s compatibility table does not list Node 24 for Angular 17.3.x, 18.2.x, or 19.x. These slots can fail on an unsupported runtime and do not validate supported consumer configurations. Add a Node dimension to the matrix and select a supported Node version for each Angular version.

Nitro getRouteRulesForPath routeRules headers normalization source event.context.routeRules

💡 Result:

In the Nitro framework, route rules provide a way to define behavior—such as redirects, headers, and caching—for specific URL patterns [1]. getRouteRulesForPath getRouteRulesForPath(path: string) is a utility function exposed by the Nitro runtime that returns the resolved NitroRouteRules for a given path [2][3]. It is useful for programmatically retrieving the rules applied to a specific URL without manually matching patterns against the configuration [3]. event.context.routeRules During the request lifecycle, Nitro resolves matching route rules before any middleware executes [4]. These resolved rules are assigned to event.context.routeRules and are available within that context for any subsequent middleware or handlers [5][4][6]. Normalization and Headers When route rules are defined in the Nitro configuration, they undergo a normalization process before being used at runtime [7]. This process includes: 1. Path Normalization: Ensuring all route patterns have a leading slash [8][7]. 2. Shortcut Resolution: Converting shorthand configurations into standard structures [7]. For example: - CORS: If cors is set to true, Nitro automatically merges permissive CORS headers (e.g., access-control-allow-origin: *) into the headers object [7]. - Redirects/Proxies: These are expanded into objects containing the destination and status codes [7][9]. - Caching: Shorthand options like swr are resolved into structured cache options [7]. 3. Header Merging: If a route rule defines headers, they are stored in the headers property of the resolved route rule object [7][9]. These headers are subsequently applied to the response by Nitro's internal middleware [4][6].

Use a case-insensitive lookup for x-analog-no-ssr.

Nitro preserves configured header-key casing when it normalizes route rules. A mixed-case X-Analog-No-SSR key therefore does not match this lower-case property lookup, so SSR can run before response middleware applies the header. Normalize the keys or read them through Headers. Add a mixed-case configuration test.

the route-rule header lookup near x-analog-no-ssr to be case-insensitive, using
normalized keys or a Headers-based lookup so mixed-case configurations reliably
disable SSR. Add a test covering a mixed-case X-Analog-No-SSR route-rule key and
preserve the existing behavior for lower-case keys.

Recompile after a tsconfig change.

The change watcher only clears TsconfigResolver caches. TS_EXT_REGEX excludes tsconfig.json, so handleHotUpdate does not schedule performCompilation. The persistent Angular compilation and outputFiles can therefore keep the old compiler roots until another source change or a server restart.

Call invalidateCompilation() after invalidating the tsconfig caches. Add a regression test that changes a tsconfig root and verifies that compilation runs again.
