num_ctxto a GGUF load that goes to ds4.
load_ctxis set for everyModelPath::Gguf, including a load thatgguf_goes_to_ds4later sends to ds4. For ds4 this has two effects:
ctx_explicitbecomestrue.vllm_max_model_len(ctx_size, true)returns the clampednum_ctx, whichspawn_ds4_serverreceives as--ctx.
RunningModel::needs_contextreturnsfalseforEngine::Ds4, soretire_for_contextnever reloads a ds4 model. The first/api/chator/api/generaterequest withnum_ctxtherefore fixes the ds4 window for every later client until the model unloads. For example, a client that sendsnum_ctx: 2048reduces the shared window to 2048 tokens. The PR description andLoadOptions::ctxboth say ds4 does not take part in this behavior.
gguf_goes_to_ds4depends only on values that exist before the loop. Compute it once beforeload_ctx, and exclude ds4 there.Proposed fix
- let load_ctx = opts - .ctx - .filter(|_| matches!(model_path, ModelPath::Gguf(..) | ModelPath::Diffusion(_))); + // ds4 is not reloaded per window (see RunningModel::needs_context), + // so a request's num_ctx must not size its load either. + let goes_to_ds4 = gguf_goes_to_ds4( + gguf_engine_from_env(), + &model_path, + embedding_ctx.is_some(), + decision, + ); + let load_ctx = opts.ctx.filter(|_| { + !goes_to_ds4 && matches!(model_path, ModelPath::Gguf(..) | ModelPath::Diffusion(_)) + });

Gate the tests that depend on a live fixture process, or make them pass on Windows.
On Windows, running_model_fixture starts cmd /C timeout /T 60 /NOBREAK. In a CI job without a console, timeout can exit at once. When that happens:
m.process.is_alive()returnsfalse.check_running_fortakes the "process has exited" branch and removes the entry.state.0.manager.lock().await.running[&key]then panics on the missing key.
The PR description reports this failure on the x86_64 Windows "Build + test" leg, so the change breaks that CI workflow. a_model_waiting_to_be_retired_turns_new_requests_away (lines 6005–6075) has the same exposure: it calls check_running_for and then indexes running[&key].
Until #678 lands, add #[cfg(unix)] to these two tests. Alternatively, make the Windows placeholder process reliable, for example ping -n 61 127.0.0.1 > NUL, so every leg passes before merge.

#675: /api/chat and /api/generate load a llama-server model at the request's num_ctx, floored at 4 and cut to the trained context as Ollama does, and reload a model loaded with another window once its requests finish. Meanwhile it takes no new requests, and the slot it frees is reserved for the replacement. A request with no num_ctx uses whatever is loaded. Safetensors engines and ds4 keep the daemon's window. #676: prompt_eval_count is the whole prompt, cached prefix included, as in Ollama: llama-server's prompt_n + cache_n, and a provider's prompt_tokens unreduced. What the usage ledger records is unchanged. #677: when a local template refuses adjacent same-role messages ("roles must alternate", as Gemma's does), retry once with adjacent user (or assistant) messages merged. Ollama merges them for every request; doing it only after a refusal leaves other models' prompts as written. Messages with tool calls are never merged. Fixes #675 Fixes #676 Fixes #677

Not changing check_running_by_digest to decline a retiring model. That path is reached by the same content under another name, which does not hold the retirer's load lock, so declining would make it load a second copy beside the busy one (an OOM risk for that request). Joining only delays the client that asked for the new window, and only while the digest path stays continuously busy. I added a comment saying so. The other review points are addressed: ds4, the slot reservation and digest-scoped retirement landed in the squashed commit, and the Windows fixture is fixed by #678, now merged. |

Coordinate digest alias admission with retirement.
ensure_model checks check_running_by_digest before calling retire_for_context. check_running_for rejects a retiring entry, but check_running_by_digest does not inspect m.retiring; when m.needs_context(ctx) is false, it increments m.in_flight and returns an ActivityGuard. A request using another name for the same digest can therefore join the model that retire_for_context is waiting to drain. Continuous traffic through that alias can keep the unbounded retirement wait from reaching zero.
Do not fix this by only rejecting retiring digest hits. That can allow a duplicate load under the alias. Make digest lookup coordinate with the retiring entry so new work waits for or reuses the existing retirement without admitting requests to the retiring process.
