I host here a mixture of personal toys and research tools. On the research side, I’m interested in how things are structured, and I study natural language phenomena (typically phonotactics) using universal algebra and related concepts. On the toy side, I make games (usually for retroconsoles) and have made a few of my own simple CPU architectures. Some day, I’d like to make a computer algebra system tailored to the kinds of things I do. I don’t know right now if that would count as tool or toy.
In no particular order, my most-used programming languages are probably C, AWK, and Haskell. Much of the AWK is personal scripts that would have little value to others, so while my system is littered with it, very little is published.
I started programming on a TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator. Mostly small games, but occasionally some useful things too. I still have a 92+, which runs the same software but on a bigger screen with a larger font that’s easier to read. So for the longest time, I was working exclusively on a 10–16MHz processor. Those little systems still feel like home to me.
