Release deferred replicas' backlog reference before freeing the backlog - #5152
A replica with io-threads enabled can abort on listLength(server.replicas) == 0 in freeReplicationBacklog() when it does a full sync while one of its sub-replicas is still being fed. replicationAttachToNewPrimary() assumes disconnectReplicas() freed every replica, but since #3324freeClient() only schedules the free of a client whose write is still owned by an I/O thread, so a lagging sub-replica stays in the list. This makes disconnectReplicas() wait for that I/O thread and release the replica's reference to the replication buffer, so the backlog can be freed while the replica waits for its async free.
AI generated details
Problem
replicationAttachToNewPrimary() (src/replication.c:2667) calls disconnectReplicas() and then freeReplicationBacklog(), which asserted that server.replicas is empty (src/replication.c:399). RM_RdbLoad does the same (src/module.c:14899).
#3324 (a3a8399, backported to 9.1 as db63cd4) changed freeClient() to defer when the client has I/O in flight (src/networking.c:2392):
if (c->flag.protected||c->flag.protected_rdb_channel||clientHasPendingIO(c)) {
freeClientAsync(c);
return0;
}
disconnectReplicas() ignores the return value. An online replica that is draining a backlog almost always has a write job in flight, since its next write is dispatched as soon as the previous one completes (src/networking.c:3781), and io_write_state stays non-idle until beforeSleep() consumes the completion. #3719 fixed the same leftover assumption for the primary client only.
Reproduced on unstable with a primary, a middle node (io-threads 2, io-threads-always-active yes), and a sub-replica that was paused while the middle node buffered about 80 MB of SETs, then resumed just before REPLICAOF <new primary> on the middle node. About 1 in 9 runs aborted:
=== ASSERTION FAILED ===
==> replication.c:399 'listLength(server.replicas) == 0' is not true
...
(replicaLoadPrimaryRDBFromDisk+0xfa)
(handleBioThreadFinishedRDBDownload+0xe6)
(replicationCron+0x12a)
Affected: 9.1.0-rc2 through 9.1.3 and 9.2.0-rc1. 9.0 frees synchronously.
Fix
When freeClient() defers a replica, disconnectReplicas() calls waitForClientIO() so no I/O thread reads the buffer blocks, then freeReplicaReferencedReplBuffer(). The replica stays in server.replicas as a close_asap client, so its normal teardown in freeClientReplicationData() still runs when the async free happens. freeReplicationBacklog() now asserts that any replica left is closing and references no buffer block, which is the condition freeing the blocks actually needs.
The replica cannot be written to after losing its reference. Its completion is still queued, so trySendWriteToIOThreads() returns early, and beforeSleep() frees it right after consuming the completion. handleClientsWithPendingWrites() skips close_asap clients in between.
Alternative considered
Waiting for the I/O and then freeing the replica synchronously. The completion job in the I/O thread outbox still holds the client pointer, so processOutboxBatch() would read freed memory.
Calling freeClientReplicationData() on the deferred replica and clearing flag.replica. It asserts !clientHasPendingIO(), which a completed but unconsumed write still trips. Clearing the flag also skips the rdb_pipe_conns cleanup in unlinkClient(), which is keyed on flag.replica.
Testing
The test reaches the deferred free deterministically by protecting the sub-replica's client with DEBUG PROTECT-CLIENT, which takes the same return 0 path in freeClient(). The I/O-thread race reproduces in roughly 1 run in 9 and is too timing-dependent for CI, so the test doesn't use it. Without the fix:
[err]: Full sync with a sub-replica whose free is deferred does not crash in tests/integration/replication-4.tcl
Expected [process_is_alive 9100] (context: type eval line 12 cmd {assert {[process_is_alive $replica_pid]}} proc ::test)
with replication.c:399 'listLength(server.replicas) == 0' is not true in the middle node's log. With the fix, the I/O-thread reproduction above passed 40 of 40 runs.

A replica with io-threads enabled can abort on
`listLength(server.replicas) == 0` in `freeReplicationBacklog()` when it
does a full sync while one of its sub-replicas is still being fed.
`replicationAttachToNewPrimary()` assumes `disconnectReplicas()` freed
every replica, but since valkey-io#3324 `freeClient()` only schedules the free of
a client whose write is still owned by an I/O thread, so a lagging
sub-replica stays in the list. This makes `disconnectReplicas()` wait
for that I/O thread and release the replica's reference to the
replication buffer, so the backlog can be freed while the replica waits
for its async free.

Replica cleanup now handles replicas whose freeing is deferred. RDB loading and dual-channel synchronization recreate a replication backlog when replicas remain attached. New tests cover full sync, buffered writes during RDB transfer, and RDB loading with a protected replica.
disconnectReplicas handles replicas whose freeing is deferred by waiting for I/O and releasing their replication-buffer reference. freeReplicationBacklog checks that remaining replicas are closing and hold no replication-buffer node.

VM_RdbLoad and dualChannelSyncSuccess create a backlog when replicas remain attached. Tests cover module RDB loading, full sync, and delivery of writes buffered during RDB transfer.
valkey-io/valkey#4075: Adds streaming-compressed full sync and dual-channel synchronization paths, which connect to this PR’s backlog handling in those paths.
valkey-io/valkey#5076: Stabilizes a dual-channel full-sync test for writes made during RDB loading; this PR changes backlog creation and adds coverage for buffered writes.
The change is mergeable with a bounded testing follow-up: verify that the downstream sub-replica receives the buffered write, rather than checking only the middle replica.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: replicas that are deferred for freeing keep a backlog reference released before the backlog is freed. The changeset matches this: freeReplicationBacklog accepts closing replicas without buffer references, and disconnectReplicas releases those references via waitForClientIO and freeReplicaReferencedReplBuffer. The title is specific and does not use vague terms. It omits the RM_RdbLoad and dual-channel backlog changes, which is acceptable.

RM_RdbLoad() calls disconnectReplicas() and then frees the replication
backlog. A replica whose free is deferred stays in server.replicas until
beforeSleep() frees it, so the next propagated write or replication cron
PING asserts in replicationFeedReplicas() that attached replicas have a
backlog. A new replica attaching in that window also gets no backlog,
since syncCommand() only creates one for the first replica.
When a replica is still attached, create a new backlog under a new
replication ID, the same way syncCommand() does when it creates one from
scratch, so no replica can continue the old history.

A dual channel full sync replays the main channel buffer in
dualChannelSyncSuccess(), before replicaAfterLoadPrimaryRDB() creates the
replication backlog. A sub-replica whose free disconnectReplicas()
deferred is still attached then, so proxying the buffer asserts in
replicationFeedStreamFromPrimaryStream() that attached replicas have a
backlog.
Create the backlog once the primary's offset is restored and before the
buffer is replayed, when a replica is still attached.

Assert that the sub-replica receives the buffered write.
The test comment says the buffered write is streamed to the sub-replica. The test reads foo only from $replica, so a sub-replica that never receives the write still passes. After the $replica check, wait for the sub-replica link and check its value.

The earlier RM_RdbLoad crash is fixed: VM_RdbLoad now creates a new backlog under a new replication ID when a deferred replica is still attached. The dual-channel buffer replay also creates a backlog before proxying. I found no new defect in how disconnectReplicas releases the buffer reference or in the relaxed freeReplicationBacklog assert.
Risk: Medium. This touches replication backlog ownership on full sync and RM_RdbLoad. A mistake would crash a replica or primary that has a sub-replica whose free was deferred, but the new code only runs on that deferred path, which already crashed before this change.
Open findings: none.
Backport: Needed for 9.2, 9.1. The deferred free in freeClient() (clientHasPendingIO, from #3324) and the old listLength(server.replicas) == 0 assert in freeReplicationBacklog() are both on upstream/9.2 and upstream/9.1. upstream/9.0 and older do not have the deferred free.
