REG-READER: computed-key registrar writes and their readers in --for - #569
REG-READER: computed-key registrar writes and their readers in --for
Stacked on #560 (lane/forliteral-3); I will retarget this to main after #560 merges.
What changes
A computed-key write such as storage[resource+"/log"] = x inside a New*/Register* function is now a strong reg= row.
When the answer already names that table, up to 2 reads are listed (t[k], .get(, or a caller's local bound to the call), drawn from the row's file and its callers' files, with a readers= count. The legend sentence prints only when such a row prints.
Measured
In-sample --for calls: 0 of 321 change against the base, so bytes are flat and no item is gained or lost. The target rows are on the practice set and will be sat separately.
The REGISTRAR-2 near-miss arms stay green.
Gates
New test/forregrowcheck.sh: on base exactly the 7 new [P] arms are red; on head all 102 arms pass. The arms cover Go, a Python function, a Python method on self._routes, a TS template key, plus literal-key, non-registrar, == and unrelated-file neighbours.
Mutants: 4 of 4 red. The crash stub and the silent stub fail every new arm.
Known limit: some computed-key writes are array fills (ret[i] = step in terraform). The rule does not filter them yet; that is logged as a follow-up card.
Registry reports now recognize qualifying computed-key writes in functions named with New, Register, new, or register prefixes, including async-prefixed names. These appear as strong table rows with the registry name.
When a report names a registry, it can include up to two matching read locations from the writing file and caller files, along with a count of detected reads. The count indicates when the search may be incomplete.
Documentation
Added guidance on which writes qualify and how reader rows and counts are displayed.
… reads are lr rows (REG-READER)
(a) A shape=table site that is the key or value of `t[k] = v` with a computed key, in a function
named New*/new_*/Register*/register_*, is a strong reg= row (`storage[resource+"/log"] =`).
A literal key, a comparison and other function names stay as before.
(b) When the answer above already names that table, the element lists up to 2 <lr> reads of it
(t[k] not assigned, t.get(), or a caller's local bound to the function's call) from the row's
file and its callers' files; readers= counts them (floor=1 when a file is unread or callers
past 16 files are not read). Present-only legend.
Gate: test/forregrowcheck.sh SW1-SW4, SW-N1-N3, RD1-RD3, RD-N1-N2, RD-X.

Walkthrough
The change recognizes computed-key registry writes in qualifying registrar functions. When the served answer names a shown registry table, it can also include reader rows from the writer’s file and caller files, with read counts and scan-completeness status.
Computed-key assignments in functions with qualifying New, new, Register, or register names produce registry rows. Literal-key writes, comparisons, and writes outside those functions are excluded. Tests cover Go, Python, and TypeScript cases.
Find and render registry readers src/forliteral.h, test/forregrowcheck.sh, changelog.d/reg-reader.md
When the answer names the table, the renderer searches the writer’s file and up to 16 caller files. It prioritizes reads with shared quoted key text, emits at most two reader rows, and reports the total read count and floor status when scans are incomplete. Tests and the changelog document these rules.
The new registry output can misidentify writes and readers, omit valid readers, and exceed its output cap in edge cases. These are bounded answer-quality issues; merging requires owner awareness and follow-up corrections.

Add incomplete-scan cases for unread files and more than 16 caller files. Exclude other floor causes and assert floor="1" on the <lit> element with the reader count. The current assertions can pass if reader-floor propagation regresses.

- Line 4515: Update the table byte-budget fit check around the XML assembly to
include reader XML, so the complete lit element stays within 40,000 bytes. When
readers must be omitted to meet the cap, disclose which readers were omitted;
preserve the existing handling of rows and other XML components.
- Around line 3981-3985: The reader-row scan counts table-name matches inside
comments and strings as code reads. Update the logic around tableReadOnLine to
validate each match as code before adding it to found, and continue searching
later positions on the same line when a match is rejected.
- Around line 3981-3985: Update the scan around tableReadOnLine and
found.emplace_back to record each matching read occurrence on a line instead of
emitting only one hit per line; preserve the existing row limit and floor-marker
behavior. Add a regression test for consume(handlers[a], handlers[b]) on one
line that verifies both reads are counted.
- Around line 2690-2694: Update the registration-row construction around
`row.regCall`, `row.regDirect`, and `row.subscript` so writes identified as
targeting slices or arrays are excluded before they are promoted as registration
evidence. Preserve registration rows for other recognized registration forms.
- Around line 3877-3882: Update the registrar-call scan using t, fn, and at to
recognize a result only when the registrar call itself is the assigned value,
not when it appears nested inside another call. Add a regression test showing
that assigning chooseOtherTable(NewRESTStorage()) does not count or list s[key]
as a registry read.
- Around line 2684-2686: Constrain the `hitPast` check so a matching occurrence
counts as a registration only when it belongs to the `storage[key] = other`
assignment, not a later statement in the registrar; preserve the existing
literal-key check for assignment hits.
- Around line 4000-4001: Update the cue matching used by the while gate and
taskHasCue so a table expression in served is recognized both as raw CDATA text
and in its escaped callee-signature representation, preserving existing raw-text
matches and allowing qualifying readers through.
- Around line 3925-3927: Update the early-return branch for unavailable graphs
in the caller-discovery flow so it marks the existing reader-count floor flag
before returning files; preserve the current return behavior when g is null or
owner is out of range.
- Around line 2678-2679: Update the fallback around subscriptWriteOf so it
accepts a match only when the receiver or assignment operator is in the code
span tier, excluding examples inside multiline strings while preserving valid
writes with string-valued right sides.
- Around line 3976-3979: Update the caller-alias handling around boundToCallOf
so reads count only while the alias remains bound to the original value within
its scope. Track scope and reassignment, exclude unrelated parameters that
merely share the alias name, and preserve genuine <lr> rows instead of letting
stale alias matches displace them.
- Line 4019: Update the caller-discovery logic around tableReadsInFile to
recognize caller-local aliases in the writer’s file as well as the registrar’s
file, and include reads through those aliases in both readers= and <lr> output.
- Around line 2657-2659: Update the key-classification logic containing
`substituted`, `quoted`, and the `std::all_of` check to recognize supported
numeric literal forms, including nondecimal forms such as `0x10`, as literals
before classifying a key as computed. Preserve the existing handling of quoted
keys and template literals with substitutions.
- Around line 3866-3882: Update `boundToCallOf` to parse the declared
caller-local name rather than capturing a declaration keyword such as `const`,
so `const routes = registerRoutes(...)` records `routes`; add a TypeScript
caller test that verifies a later `routes[key]` read is counted. If the
resulting reader count cannot represent a total, preserve the required floor
marker.

`for( k = n; k-- > 0; )` and `substr( find_last_of( ".:" ) + 1 )` wrap a size_t on their last

Subscript-write rows: a hex or digit-separated key (0x10, 1_000) is a literal; a line of a
multi-line string is no write; a hit in a later statement of the line is not the write's.
Table readers: `const x = f(` binds x; the call must be the assigned value (no nested call);
a writer-file local bound to the call reads the table too; reads in comments or strings are
not counted (span tier); each read on a line counts; the escaped table name in an attribute
counts as named; no call graph makes readers= a floor; lr rows that would pass the byte cap
are left out (readers= still counts them).

8165732 merge of origin/main 87ede40 (scripts/merge_main.sh; no hand-resolved conflict; the REGEN AFTER BUILD capture already matched the built binary, nothing to re-record).
ba6a39f CodeRabbit round: subscript-write rows treat 0x10 / 1_000 keys as literals, skip a line of a multi-line string, and ignore a hit in a later statement of the line; table readers bind const x = f( and only a direct call (not g(f())), also bind in the writer's file, skip reads in comments and strings, count every read on a line, accept the escaped table name, set the floor with no call graph, and drop lr rows past the byte cap (readers= still counts them). Gate test/forregrowcheck.sh: new arms red on 3603b8a, 112 PASS now, ASan clean. The review-body nitpick (reader-floor tests) is covered by RD-F1 (17 caller files: floor="1") and RD-F2 (16: none); an unread-file arm was not added (the index reads the same file first). CI fixes: changelog fragment no longer names arm coordinates (ripwirepubliccheck arm 3); cppqualcheck --uses=readWholeFile re-pinned 56 -> 57 over main (the one new row is tableReadersOf). Measured: the 321 in-sample --for calls are byte-identical to main 87ede40 (0 changed, the same as 3603b8a vs its base).
