for: a prose question about the docs ends with the top-ranked doc sections (<doc_body>) - #561
for: a prose question about the docs ends with the top-ranked doc sections (<doc_body>)
A --for task that reads as prose, whose first ten file-tail rows hold two or more doc files (.md, .mdx, .rst, .txt, .html, …), now ends with <doc_body>. It holds the highest-ranked sections of the first three doc files the answer shows, chosen the way --recall chooses them. Before, --for named the right doc files but printed none of their text, so the agent had to make a second call. The full rules are in changelog.d/for-doc-body.md.
Design
Allowance: the block has its own 7,500-byte allowance, so the rest of the answer is unchanged.
Price: it prices itself: est_tokens= on the root counts the block alone.
Splitting the allowance: files share it by --recall's water-filling. A section that's too big is excerpted around its densest window of task words (cut="1" range=S-E/N).
Under a token budget: the answer is served first and the block takes the tokens left over. What doesn't fit is held (held="budget" held_bytes=, plus next= the same call without the budget).
Relevance floor: a section is served only if it holds a third of the task's subject words (at most three). Each file's top-ranked section is always kept, and the rest are counted in below_floor=.
Labelled as lexical:match="lexical" on the root, and a sentence in the legend.
Off switch:RIPWIRE_NO_FOR_DOC_BODY=1 turns it off. --json and the MCP for tool carry the same element.
Measured
Docs questions, graded by a mechanical anchor grader (composed grade):
dev (34)
held (14)
new held set (20, written blind after the lane was built)
main
0 / 21 / 13
0 / 7 / 7
0 / 12 / 8
this PR
6 / 21 / 7
3 / 7 / 4
3 / 11 / 6
Cells are complete / partial / none. No row is lower than main on any of the three sets. On 2 rows of the new held set the block prints a decoy section that a grader marks as a wrong answer; the floor does not remove those two.
Code questions:
The block fires on 15 of 217 code rows, and those answers are identical to main once the block is removed.
On the other 306 of the 321 in-sample --for calls the block can't fire.
Together the 15 blocks add 145 KB. The relevance floor cut sections from off-subject files from 37 to 18. The floor is lexical, so it can't drop a top-ranked changelog or benchmark section; a semantic version is carded.
Review
Two independent reviews.
First review:
A budget held the whole block instead of serving the answer first.
It also had five smaller notes.
All fixed.
Delta review:
Budget fix confirmed: at 7 --token-budget values on 6 rows, plus --max-tokens, --json and the MCP budget, the answer minus the block equals main 42/42, and held_bytes is exact.
Slowdown found and fixed: the line-start scan was quadratic on very long lines; a 2.6 MB line took 127 s. Its reads are now bounded: 2.2 s, with a timed gate arm.
Gates
test/fordocbodycheck.sh: 34 arms, red on main. They also go red on the reviews' output-edit mutants (inflated held_bytes, an under-reported price) and on crash and silent stubs.
--for can now include relevant sections from documentation files in its results for prose-focused tasks. Sections are ranked and may be excerpted to fit available space.
Documentation sections are included in XML, JSON, and MCP responses, with content adjusted to respect token budgets.
Documentation
Added guidance on when documentation content appears and how section selection and output limits work.
…a prose task led by doc files
A prose --for task (trigger v1: no backtick, ::, (), snake_case, camelCase or
dotted call) whose first 10 tail files in rank order hold 2 or more doc files
ends with <doc_body>: the sections --recall picks in the first 3 doc files the
answer shows, each with p= l= e= n= rank= of=, in the block's own 7500-byte
allowance outside est_tokens (the answer before it is unchanged). The legend
says a section is a lexical match, not a verified answer. Held under a token
budget or a body ceiling; --json carries a doc_body key; MCP `for` carries the
element. RIPWIRE_NO_FOR_DOC_BODY=1 turns it off.
The trigger reads the tail in rank order (computeFileTail rankOrder): a code
question's tail prints code rows first since 11-02, and read in that order the
rule fired on 6 of 48 DOCS-DEV rows instead of 17.
Gate: test/fordocbodycheck.sh (red on 2562d99; two mutants red).

…ssion, block price, lexical marker
M1: under --token-budget, --max-tokens with --detail and MCP budget_tokens the doc sections are served
into the tokens left after the answer's est_tokens (the allowance shrinks until the priced block fits);
only the part that does not fit is held (held="budget" held_bytes=, f why="budget" held=N, next= the
call without the budget); a budget the answer alone spends holds the block whole.
S1: a section that does not fit its file's share is skipped and the next tried; the unspent rest goes to
the best section still left, cut to fit around the densest window of the task's words (cut="1" range=S-E/N).
S2: est_tokens= on the block root prices the block alone (XML, JSON, MCP).
S3: gate arms for the decoy/lexical sentence, rank order, hostile doc text, budgets, the excerpt.
S4: the changelog and legend say what the prose trigger really does (a cue list).
S6: why="unreadable" | "allowance" | "budget"; JSON unserved entries carry why.
Marker: match="lexical" on the block root in XML, compact, JSON and MCP.

… the pooled rest equally, converge the budget fit
A file's top-ranked section that does not fit its share is an excerpt (up to 6/10 of the share) instead of
being skipped for smaller lower-ranked ones; the pooled unspent allowance is split equally among the files
with sections left (one huge page no longer starves the others); the budget fit shrinks by the measured
over-shoot with up to 8 attempts and tries the minimum allowance before holding the block whole.

…t, one renderer
excerptAroundTerms is split into collectTermHits / bestWindowStart / windowEnd; forDocWhyName is a table
(quality-delta gated its two ternary clones); the two dialect renderers share renderForDocBody over a
ForDocBodyInputs struct (the 7-8 argument list repeated across them). Output is byte-identical to 1b
on the 48 DOCS-DEV rows.

…one)
finishForLensHeader had no caller left (the root's est_tokens is now read from finishForLensHeaderPriced) and is removed;
the unserved reason is a string_view constant, not a three-way name function that clones two others.

docs/LIMITS.md regenerated (kForDocTopShareTenths is a new unsourced parameter); the doc block reads the
--max-tokens the root was priced with instead of adding a cfg.maxTokens read (shapingflagcheck pins 22).

…serve, price the held block, gate arms
- nearLineStart and windowEnd read at most the bytes they can use: a doc section of one very long line cost hits x line length
(2.6 MB line: 127 s); arm p1 serves a 1.3 MB line under a 25 s limit, with and without a token budget
- fitForDocBody serves the default-allowance block once, not on each of up to 8 fit attempts
- the held-whole block states its price (est_tokens= XML, "est_tokens" JSON); arm h2
- arm b2: held_bytes is exact (bytes + held_bytes == the unbudgeted block) and the block's est_tokens is recomputed from its bytes
- unitPassage takes the passage identity as one ForDocPassage and a DocCut; one renderForDocBody(in, budget, dialect); ForDocPaths and
per-row helpers split forDocBodyXml

A doc section is served only when it holds a third of the task's distinct subject words (3 at most; subject words = 3+ letter words that are
not common English nor doc/describe/explain/show). Sections below it are counted in below_floor= (JSON below_floor), a file with none left is
f p= why=floor, and a pick whose every readable file is off the subject prints no block. Arms q1-q3. JSON passage row split out.

…-ranked section
The held-2 acceptance rows showed the floor dropping a file's rank-1 section (mdref-02 Complete to Partial, mdref-03 one item): a section can be
worded around the mechanism while the task is worded around the symptom. Each file's top section is always kept; why=floor and the all-off-subject
no-block path are gone (a file can no longer be wholly below the floor). Arm q2.

Walkthrough
The change adds ranked documentation sections to eligible --for results in XML, JSON, and MCP formats. It applies prose-task and documentation-file conditions, section relevance rules, and byte and token allowances. Tests and documentation cover the new behavior.
Changes: Documentation body output
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Select and serve documentation sections src/recall.h, src/forpage.h, src/fordocbody.h
Recall section data now includes heading symbol indexes, and recall scoring uses a shared helper. File-tail ranking can use the plain interleaved walk. The new selection logic applies task and file conditions, ranks sections, and serves them within shared allowances.
Add documentation bodies to responses src/verbs_for.h, src/mcpverbs.h
XML, JSON, and MCP response paths select and render documentation bodies. They pass the answer token estimate and applicable token budget to the renderer.
Verify and document the output test/fordocbodycheck.sh, test/regression.sh, docs/LIMITS.md, changelog.d/for-doc-body.md
The integration test covers selection, output formats, allowances, escaping, and large sections. The regression gate runs the test. The limits document and changelog describe the feature and its caps.
Documentation bodies can expose credentials in headings, bypass signatures-only and budget limits, and misreport omitted content. Resolve these issues before merging; multi-root XML parity and continuation behavior also need correction.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Removing finishForLensHeader requires every caller to migrate to finishForLensHeaderPriced. A remaining test or helper using the removed wrapper would fail to compile.
A build or related CI target fails with an unresolved function name.
This can occur when: A compiled repository test or helper outside the supplied call site still calls finishForLensHeader.

handwritten matches in recall.
- Line 662: Redact the heading assigned to p.heading from ing.symbols before
emitting passage metadata, using the existing redaction behavior for both whole
and excerpted passages. Preserve the --no-redact option so headings remain
unchanged when redaction is disabled.
- Around line 629-632: Update the preparation flow around
buildSectionGranularBody and the !l.sections fallback so that when a positive
remaining budget causes the block to be held whole rather than emitted,
redaction tally changes from processing that block are restored. Keep
reportRedactions counts limited to redactions in emitted context.
- Around line 848-855: Update the held-passage accounting around countOf and the
heldBytes calculation to compare passages by identity and excerpt range against
the unbudgeted full block. Count passages and text that are missing from out,
including cases where other sections replace them, and use that comparison to
populate the file’s held count and heldBytes rather than relying on aggregate
counts and lengths.
- Line 1063: Update forDocBodyPriceAttr so its JSON size calculation counts only
bytes actually serialized in both served and held blocks; remove the un-emitted
XML est_tokens attribute overhead while preserving the actual JSON key and value
pricing.
- Around line 803-805: When shares.servedCount excludes a loaded file, add its

nearLineStart so the adjusted boundaries are accepted only when the final

introducing a separate scoring rule.

- Line 4817: Update the XML and JSON documentation-output paths so
`--signatures-only` skips `doc_body` when a prose task meets the documentation
threshold. Preserve signature output and existing behavior for other flags.
- Around line 4819-4820: Constrain `pickForDocBody` in the `ForDocBodyPick` flow
to documentation files present in the emitted tail rows, so truncated tail
output cannot trigger or name omitted files. Preserve rank order when evaluating
the trigger, and apply the same emitted-path constraint to both JSON and MCP
output paths.
- Line 4823: Update the ForDocBodyBudget handling at the ForDocDialect::Xml
rendering call so a zero forAnswerEstTokens caused by an unmeasured answer is
not treated as the full budget remaining. When a budget is active and the answer
is unmeasured, withhold document sections and disclose that the remaining budget
is unknown.
- Line 4821: Update the docBudget calculation so that when both cfg.tokenBudget

Twelve threads on #561 (caada5f). Fixed: the recentred excerpt keeps every task word the winning window held; a section heading is redacted like its text; a block held whole gives back the redactions its preparation counted; a file the allowance did not reach counts in dropped=; held= and held_bytes= are read off the passages by identity (file, rank); only a doc file the answer prints is served (XML, --json, MCP pass the rows their tail printed); --token-budget with --max-tokens and --detail serves into the smaller; an answer with no measured est_tokens holds the block whole; the --json block prices its est_tokens key once; --signatures-only prints no block; a multi-root XML run serves it as --json does; the b4b gate loop fails on an invalid iteration and b1 compares passage text across formats. The recentred excerpt keeps every task word the winning window held.
Section headings are redacted the same way as their text.
A block held whole gives back the redactions its preparation counted.
A file the allowance did not reach is counted in dropped=.
held= and held_bytes= are read from the sections by identity.
Only doc files the answer prints are served (XML, --json, MCP).
--token-budget together with --max-tokens/--detail serves into the smaller of the two.
An unmeasured answer holds the block whole.
The --json block prices its est_tokens key once.
--signatures-only prints no block.
Multi-root XML serves the block the same way --json does.
