A merge-queue run of #30883 failed in "Test examples" with:

UnableToUnlockLockfileError: Cannot unlock file "/home/runner/.cache/mongodb-binaries/8.2.6.lock", because it is not locked by this process

A later run of this PR was ejected by supabase start, which failed on a 502 from deno.land:

Error status 502:
##[error]Process completed with exit code 1.

After this PR, each CI job that runs MongoDB tests has the mongod binary before any test starts, so no test downloads it. And every setup step that fetches over the network runs again when it fails.

Why the tests downloaded the binary

mongodb-memory-server has an install script that downloads mongod once, during pnpm install. pnpm runs it only for packages listed under allowBuilds in pnpm-workspace.yaml. That list named mongodb-memory-server@10.4.3. In May, Dependabot moved the package to 11, so the script stopped running.

Since then, the first test to start MongoDB in each package downloads the binary. Turbo runs packages in parallel, and four examples use MongoDB (mongo-demo, mongo-blog-leaderboard, retail-store, bundle-size). Their downloads all go to ~/.cache/mongodb-binaries and take turns on one lock file. When they overlap, one fails. A slow or failed download also fails a test.

Fixing allowBuilds alone would not help CI: the test jobs install with --ignore-scripts first, and the second install is already up to date, so no install script runs.

What changes

  • .github/actions/mongod-binary restores the binary from the Actions cache, keyed on OS, architecture and MongoDB version. On a miss it runs scripts/download-mongod-binary.mjs. The package tests, the example tests and the integration tests (.github/actions/integration-tests) use it after installing.

  • scripts/download-mongod-binary.mjs downloads the binary in one process and checks it runs --version. A failed attempt is retried up to four times, with a growing wait. Before each retry it deletes lock files and any binary that does not run, and clears mongodb-memory-server's in-memory path cache. Without that last step a retry gets the deleted binary's path back without downloading.

  • allowBuilds names mongodb-memory-server without a version, so a version bump no longer turns the install script off. Local pnpm install downloads the binary once again, as it did before May.

  • Retries for network setup steps. scripts/retry-command.mjs runs a command up to three times, with a growing wait, and its --before-retry option undoes a failed attempt. It wraps:

    • supabase start, in ci.yml and supabase-images.yml, with supabase stop --no-backup between attempts;
    • the cloudflare-worker example's db:up, with docker compose down --volumes between attempts;
    • the Prisma 7 schema engine fetch. Its time limit goes from 5 to 10 minutes to leave room for retries.

    The Supabase CLI download retries in curl (--retry 4 --retry-all-errors). pnpm install retries package downloads five times instead of two (fetchRetries). The mongod download script uses the same retry loop.

  • The mongod cache holds both folders the binary can be in: the install script downloads into node_modules/.cache/mongodb-memory-server and the download script into ~/.cache/mongodb-binaries.

  • The Testing Guide describes the mongod step and the retries, and no longer gives stale version ranges.

Tests

  • Unit tests for the retry loop, the retry command's arguments and lock-file removal, in pnpm test:scripts.
  • The retry command by hand: a command that fails twice then succeeds is run three times with the cleanup between; a command that always fails exits 1 with its last error.
  • By hand, with HOME set to an empty folder:
    • an empty cache downloads 8.2.6, and a second run finds it;
    • a truncated binary plus a stale 8.2.6.lock fails once, then downloads again and runs;
    • a refused connection is tried 4 times, then fails with the download error and leaves no lock file.

Alternatives considered

  • Retry the whole test step. Rejected: it reruns every test to recover from one setup failure, and the mongod race can lose again.
  • Run the MongoDB test packages one at a time. Rejected: it makes every run slower to hide a download problem.
  • Fix allowBuilds only. Not enough, as above: CI's installs never run the script.

Test packages that start in parallel each downloaded mongod into one
shared folder and failed on its lock file ("Cannot unlock file
.../8.2.6.lock"). The install script that used to download it once had
stopped running: allowBuilds named mongodb-memory-server@10.4.3 after
Dependabot moved the package to 11.

A new action restores the binary from the Actions cache or downloads it,
retrying a failed download and removing stale locks and broken binaries
between attempts. The package and example test jobs and the integration
tests use it. allowBuilds now names the package without a version.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Invoke the downloader with an absolute path.

Both action commands pass a relative path, so the script's entrypoint guard does not call main(). Each command exits successfully without resolving a version or downloading and verifying mongod. The cache key therefore contains an empty version, and the preload step does nothing.

Minor · Skip deleting a configured system binary. · download-mongod-binary.mjs:44

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Skip deleting a configured system binary.

When MONGOMS_SYSTEM_BINARY is set, MongoBinary.getPath() returns that path. The script then runs --version on it, and rmSync() deletes the file if that check fails. The file is user-managed, so the script should not delete it.

The deletion is reachable in two cases:

  • MONGOMS_SYSTEM_BINARY_VERSION_CHECK=false. getPath() skips its own --version probe, so a binary that fails the script's execFileSync check is deleted.
  • The default version check is on, but the binary prints a matching db version line and exits non-zero. getPath() checks only the output text, so the binary passes. The script's execFileSync then throws, and rmSync() deletes the file.

A binary with no parseable db version line fails inside getPath(), before the script's try block. The script does not delete it in that case.

Delete only binaries that the script downloads. Skip the deletion when SYSTEM_BINARY is set.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Disable the postinstall download in CI installs that use the MongoDB preload action.

On a fresh CI job where pnpm does not reuse a side-effects result, the allowed mongodb-memory-server postinstall can download MongoDB before the preload action restores its cache. The repository does not restore the MongoDB cache during setup. This does not affect installs that reuse a side-effects result or already have the binary.

Set MONGOMS_DISABLE_POSTINSTALL=1 only for the affected CI install steps. The preload action will still download the binary because it calls MongoBinary.getPath() directly.

Add an automated test for the MongoDB retry cleanup.

The current tests cover removeLockFiles and generic retry sequencing separately. They do not execute the download-and-check path through a failed attempt and retry. A regression that omits failed-binary deletion or DryMongoBinary.binaryCache.clear() would not fail these tests. Add a focused test for that sequence. This is a coverage improvement, not evidence of a current production failure.

…y is never deleted

The setup action sets MONGOMS_DISABLE_POSTINSTALL, so pnpm install no
longer downloads mongod without a retry or the cache. The download script
deletes a binary that does not run only when it downloaded it, not one set
with MONGOMS_SYSTEM_BINARY. A failed --before-retry command prints a
warning. Tests cover deleting a broken binary and downloading it again.
