reloader: require authenticated roles and secure remote access - #1241
The reloader exposes its rule-reading and rule-editing API anonymously on every interface, has no distinction between readers and administrators, and has no TLS or attributable operation audit.
Keep the administrative API closed until a mounted authentication file is configured. Authenticate both the API and console using bcrypt-backed Basic authentication, with viewer/admin roles and bounded authentication work. Add loopback-by-default listening, TLS 1.2+, and reject remote plaintext listeners unless the administrator explicitly opts into a trusted TLS-proxy backend. Run Gin in release mode and audit verified actor, role, target, method, result and accepted content fingerprint without credentials or rule bodies.
This is a deliberate compatibility change: replacing only the reloader image makes the existing Service-based console unavailable, because the default listener is loopback and an unconfigured administrative API returns 503. File watching and Prometheus reload notifications remain available when the administrative API is disabled. Existing images and deployments are not changed automatically.
No TiDB Operator code change is required when its existing TidbMonitor additional-container merge is supported (checked against v1.6.6). Create authentication and TLS Secrets first, then update the reloader image, additionalContainers.args and Secret mounts together in the CR. This preserves the generated watch/persistence command and existing Service port 9089; console/API clients must switch to HTTPS and Basic authentication.
See the complete TiDB Operator upgrade guide for interactive bcrypt credential generation, production CSR and laboratory CA recipes, separate authentication/TLS Secrets, the CR configuration, reconciliation and rollout checks, TLS/401/403/200 verification, an optional real save/reload check, rotation and rollback. reload/SECURITY.md links to the guide.
Validation:
Regression reproduced anonymous enumeration of rule files before the fix.
Anonymous/wrong-password rejection, read-only denial of writes, admin saves, malformed auth configuration and credential-safe audit tests.
Real TLS subprocess with trusted temporary certificate: anonymous 401, authenticated 200.
Existing save/reload acknowledgement and resource-budget regressions now run through real authentication.
Full go test -race ./reload/..., go vet ./reload/..., Linux build, git diff --check, and independent review passed.
Upgrade documentation: Bash block syntax and YAML parsing checked; bcrypt hashes generated with htpasswd verified through the actual auth middleware; CSR/test-CA certificate generation, trust/hostname/key matching and both Secret client dry-runs passed. The Kubernetes upgrade/rollout procedure has not been executed against a live cluster.
This addresses the active reloader authentication/authorization/TLS/audit portions of the urgent Helix findings. Retired EFK/Kubernetes-template evidence, root/volume-ownership migration and atomic/persisted-rule integrity are tracked separately; this PR does not claim to close every composite finding on its own.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added configurable authentication and role-based access: administrators can make changes, while viewers have read-only access. New images return a service-unavailable response until an authentication file is configured.
Added optional TLS support and security checks for network exposure. The reloader listens on loopback by default.
Added audit logging for configuration operations without recording rule contents.

Summary
Authentication policy and middleware go.mod, reload/server/auth/*
The auth package loads and validates user policies, checks Basic credentials, and enforces roles. The module lists golang.org/x/crypto and golang.org/x/sys as direct requirements.
Secured API and request auditing reload/server/apis/*, reload/server/bizlogic/*
NewSecuredService installs authentication middleware and logs request and actor details. Successful config writes add a hash, byte count, and saved status to the audit context. Tests cover access control, audit fields, and reload behavior.
Listener validation and TLS startup reload/main.go, reload/web_options*, reload/tls_integration_test.go, reload/SECURITY.md, reload/UPGRADING.md
Startup validates listener options and uses the configured address. It starts TLS when certificate and key files are configured. Tests and guides cover authenticated TLS access, listener security, and upgrade steps.
Package build and CI validation .github/workflows/build-security.yaml, Makefile, reload/Dockerfile_buildx
Build commands target the ./reload package. The workflow adds reload tests, vet, and a CGO-disabled build, and its path filter includes reload/** and Makefile.
pingcap/monitoring#1236: Adds the concurrency limit and save/reload behavior used by this change's API implementation and tests.

A rabbit checks the listener light Auth guards the paths through day and night TLS curls around the server door Audit hashes keep secrets no more The tests all hop through each new gate The build runs clean and seals its fate
The unknown field and trailing JSON cases use an empty users map. Load currently rejects them at the decode checks in reload/server/auth/auth.go, so these cases do not isolate those checks. If DisallowUnknownFields or the trailing-JSON check is removed, the empty-users check still rejects both bodies and the test still passes.
Add one valid-policy case for each restriction. Each case should contain one user entry with a valid bcrypt password_hash. Add an unknown top-level field to one case and appended JSON to the other. Each case fails only when its restriction is removed.

Check the rule file bytes after the viewer write.
The viewer write case checks only the status code. A handler that writes the rule file before the role check still returns 403 and passes. Read the file after this request and compare it with the original content. The fixture writes groups: []\n once before the table loop. The viewer write row runs before the admin write row, so the file still holds the original content at this check.

In the table-driven handler test, extend the status check to verify that a
viewer PUT leaves the rule file unchanged: read the file after the request and
compare its contents with the original fixture content, `groups: []\n`. Keep
this check scoped to the viewer write case so later admin-write cases remain
unaffected.
The audit check in TestAuthenticationRolesAndAudit only confirms that the config_sha256 key exists. It does not check config_bytes. A wrong or constant digest, or a wrong byte count, still passes this test. The saved content is groups: [], which is 10 bytes.

Add a check that a TLS 1.1 handshake fails.
The integration test sends only a TLS 1.2 request. If the server minimum in reload/main.go is lowered, this test still passes. reload/SECURITY.md states that TLS requires at least 1.2, but no test enforces that floor.
Setting only MaxVersion: tls.VersionTLS11 on the existing client does not work. Its MinVersion remains TLS 1.2, so crypto/tls rejects the range locally and never sends a ClientHello. Use a separate client configuration that sets both fields to TLS 1.1. Then assert that the server rejects the handshake with a protocol version alert. Use the same listener address that the test's HTTPS requests use for addr. Add the strings import if the file does not already include it.
Suggested addition
legacy:=&tls.Config{RootCAs: pool, MinVersion: tls.VersionTLS11, MaxVersion: tls.VersionTLS11}
conn, err:=tls.Dial("tcp", addr, legacy)
iferr==nil {
conn.Close()
t.Fatal("TLS 1.1 handshake succeeded")
}
if!strings.Contains(err.Error(), "protocol version not supported") {
t.Fatalf("TLS 1.1 handshake failed for another reason: %v", err)
}

LGTM. Auth middleware covers every route including the static console; viewer is limited to GET/HEAD; unknown users pay the same bcrypt cost; the auth file loader is strict; and non-loopback listeners require auth + TLS (an empty host such as :9089 is correctly treated as non-loopback).
Please fix before merging:
TestRealTLSListenerRequiresAuthentication is flaky. Locally (4 cores) go test -race ./reload/... failed 2 of 3 runs with TLS listener did not start ... Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers; running only ./reload passed 4/4. The probe client uses a 1s timeout, but even an anonymous request runs a cost-10 bcrypt, which can exceed 1s under -race while other packages run in parallel. Raising the client timeout (e.g. 5-10s), or using a separate longer timeout for the readiness probe, should make it deterministic.
Non-blocking notes:
Releasing this image is a breaking change for anyone who bumps the reloader without also configuring the auth file, TLS and listen address: the console and API become unavailable through the existing Service. It's worth calling this out in the release notes.
The TLS cert/key are read once at startup, so rotating them requires a pod restart.
Unauthenticated requests also take one of the 8 auth slots while bcrypt runs, so a flood of anonymous requests can make legitimate users get 429. That's acceptable for a loopback or internal listener, but worth documenting.
The TLS probe also performs bcrypt authentication, which can exceed one
second under race instrumentation and concurrent package tests. Increase
the request timeout to 10 seconds and the startup window to 30 seconds.
Validated with a 1.2-second authentication-delay reproducer, 20 repeated
TLS integration runs, and three full race-enabled reloader suite runs.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-checked at f024f09: the TLS readiness test now uses a 10s client timeout and a 30s deadline. go test -race ./reload/... passed 3/3 locally (it previously failed 2/3). LGTM.
