Welcome to the Orcasound Node documentation page! This page is catered toward educating current and future Orcasound volunteers and admin on the hydrophone setup at each location and how to maintain them. Each location has presented its own unique challenges and re-occurring issues which we will describe here. This page can be used for training purposes or to use as a template/inspiration for creating other nodes.
The Marine Science and Technology Center is located in Des Moines, WA along Redondo Beach and is run by the Highline Community college marine biology program. The MaST center consists of two buildings with a boardwalk connecting the two. The binaural hydrophone setup is located 24-31 meters out from the northwest corner of the dock and approximately 13.7 meters MLLW (Mean Lower Low Water datum). The hydrophone cables run along the sea floor, up through a PVC pipe strapped to the piling, into a white weatherproof connection box. The connection box contains a Raspberry Pi (a single-board computer (SBC)), a PoE (Power over Ethernet) splitter and a set of headphones. This PoE cable from the splitter runs out of the box and into the aquarium across the boardwalk where it connects to the PoE injector. Plugged into the injector (besides the cable to the splitter) is the ethernet box (red cable) and the UPS (uninterrupted power supply. A.K.A, the wall plug).
