Why

Add to calendar on a channel-shared event failed on dev for exactly the people it is offered to. Peter, a channel member who is not on the meeting, got:

POST /calendar/events/{id}/copy
409 provider_rejected: The owner of the calendar must either be the organizer or an attendee of an event that is imported. (reasons: participantIsNeitherOrganizerNorAttendee)

Google's events.import only takes an event into the calendar of its organizer or one of its attendees. The import body from #8558 sent the meeting's organizer and deliberately no attendees, so every import by a non-attendee was refused. #8558's tests stubbed the provider, so no real import ran before it merged.

How it works

The copy is now a snapshot: the real organizer stays, and the target calendar is listed as the only guest, already accepted, so Google accepts the import while the meeting's guest list and join link still stay out. A private extended property marks it as Macro's snapshot, and sync stores that as is_snapshot.

import body                                   Macro after sync
----------- ----------------
iCalUID   = meeting UID                       is_snapshot = true
organizer = real organizer viewerCan = nothing
attendees = [calendar, accepted] RSVP / invite -> 403 snapshot
extendedProperties.private.macroSnapshot      details -> 403 guests_cannot_modify
(no other guests, no conference) delete, reminders -> allowed

Listing the viewer as a guest would otherwise make Macro treat the snapshot as a real invitation: RSVP buttons whose answers never reach the organizer, and Add guests on a private copy. A snapshot therefore grants no capability, and the server refuses answers and invitations on it with a typed snapshot error. Its owner may change only what a guest without modify rights may (reminders and availability, through #8557's rule), and may delete it.

What

  • outbound/google/import.rs: the import body lists provider_calendar_id (the account email for a primary calendar, which is how Google names a calendar among an event's attendees) as the only, accepted guest and sets the macroSnapshot private property. A permanent failure of the import request returns ProviderImportOutcome::Refused, while rate limits and lapsed grants keep their transient or reauth handling. import_event now returns ProviderImportOutcome (Imported, AlreadyHeld, Refused) instead of an Option.
  • New CalendarMutationError::CopyRefused (copy_refused) and CalendarMutationError::Snapshot (snapshot), mapped on REST, GraphQL, the agent toolset and the calendar-service HTTP client, each with a readable message.
  • Migration calendar_event_snapshot adds calendar_events.is_snapshot (default false). It is written by inserts and content projections, read by every event query and by the mutation target, and kept in source projections only when true, so stored projections still compare equal.
  • ViewerCapabilities::for_access returns nothing for a snapshot. respond_to_event and the invite path refuse a snapshot before calling Google, which also covers guest changes made through update_event. require_detail_rights (fix(calendar): stop guests without modify rights from changing event details #8557) treats a snapshot's owner as a guest without modify rights, so detail changes get guests_cannot_modify and reminders still save.
  • The mutation target reads the snapshot flag from the addressed copy's own source projection, not the entity: a snapshot imported into one calendar can share its entity with the real invitation on another calendar of the same inbox, and an answer addressed to the snapshot's calendar must still be refused (CodeRabbit's finding).
  • CalendarEvent.isSnapshot on REST and GraphQL (static_assets/schema.graphql and the clients regenerated).
  • Web: Add to calendar sits behind the new enable-calendar-add-shared-event flag (onInDev, so it is on in dev and in previews and off in production; no PostHog flag was created). Download .ics is not flagged. A copy_refused answer shows "Google Calendar won't add this event to that calendar" and points to the download. On a snapshot, the details view says "Your copy of a shared event. It doesn't update when the organizer changes it." on desktop and the phone drawer, the RSVP row is hidden, and so is the "Only the organizer can invite guests." line. Edit and Delete stay, as on any writable event.
  • Docs: crates/calendar_events/AGENTS.md, docs/agent-guide/calendar.md, and the copy endpoint's doc comments in the router, the port and the SDK.

Tradeoffs

  • The marker is a Macro-specific private extended property, not Google's privateCopy. Other events in a user's calendar may carry privateCopy, and treating those as snapshots could hide RSVP on real invitations.
  • The snapshot is not a real seat: answers and guests on it go nowhere, so they are refused instead of being silently dropped. Asking to join is how a member gets a real seat (feat(calendar): ask to join a channel-shared event #8573).
  • The organizer stays the meeting's real organizer, not the viewer, so the snapshot shows who runs the meeting and the viewer gets no organizer controls over a copy of someone else's meeting.

Behavior changes

  • Add to calendar disappears in production (the flag has no PostHog rollout) until it passes a real Google round trip on dev. It was failing there for every non-attendee anyway.
  • Clients see two new error codes: copy_refused from the copy endpoint, and snapshot from RSVP and invite on a snapshot.

Left out

  • A real Google round trip. This branch's import body has not been sent to Google; the dev check after deploy covers it. probe_import.py, a standalone script that runs every import variant against Google on throwaway events, is kept in the worker's scratchpad for that check.
  • Copies into secondary Google calendars use the calendar ID as the guest, following Google's documented attendee self semantics. This is unverified, since no test account owns a secondary calendar.
  • The web reads isSnapshot from the entity. In the rare case where a snapshot shares its entity with the real invitation and the real invitation is canonical, the snapshot's chip can still show RSVP, but the server refuses the answer with snapshot. Showing the flag per copy would mean adding it to CalendarEventSourceContent.
  • The phone toast variant renders only the title, so the refused-import subtext ("Download the .ics file…") shows on desktop only. This is existing Toast behavior.
  • Sending deletes of a snapshot with sendUpdates=none: deletes keep main's behavior, and whether Google mails the organizer when a guest deletes an imported copy is part of the dev check.

Google's events.import refuses a copy unless the target calendar's owner
organizes or attends it (participantIsNeitherOrganizerNorAttendee). The
copy body sent the meeting's organizer and no attendees, so adding a
channel-shared event failed for every member it is offered to.

The import now lists the calendar itself, already accepted, as the
copy's only guest, and marks the copy with a private extended property.
Sync reads the marker back into calendar_events.is_snapshot, and a
snapshot grants no capability: an answer or a guest added to it would
never reach the meeting, so RSVPs and invites on it are refused with a
typed snapshot error, while deleting it still works. Google's refusals
of an import surface as copy_refused instead of a raw provider_rejected.
Add to calendar moves behind enable-calendar-add-shared-event, on in dev
only, until a real Google import has passed on dev; Download .ics stays
unflagged. A copy_refused answer gets its own toast pointing to the
download.

A snapshot lists the viewer as its only guest so Google accepts it, so
the details view now says it is a copy that does not update, and hides
the RSVP row and the "Only the organizer can invite guests." line, on
desktop and in the phone drawer.
The copy endpoint, its port and the SDK's addToCalendar now describe the
snapshot and its copy_refused refusal, and the calendar_events guide and
the app agent guide cover the snapshot, its flag and its details view.
The web service clients, GraphQL types, SDK specs, clients and reference,
and the code-mode documentation are regenerated for isSnapshot and the
copy_refused and snapshot error codes.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added the option to add channel-shared events to your calendar, controlled by a feature flag. Downloading the event file remains available.
    • Added clearer guidance when a calendar provider refuses an import, including an option to download the event file.
  • Updates
    • Added a notice explaining that imported event snapshots don’t update when the organizer changes the meeting.
    • RSVP and guest-invitation controls are unavailable for snapshots; deleting a snapshot remains available.

Calendar events now carry a snapshot marker through storage, provider integrations, API schemas, and web views. Google imports create marked snapshots with the target calendar as the accepted guest and report imported, already-held, or refused outcomes. Snapshot events have no viewer capabilities for RSVP or guest changes, but deletion remains available. A feature flag controls the add-to-calendar controls, and the download action remains available.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c219f

A snapshot on another calendar can incorrectly allow RSVP or guest changes when its event also has a non-snapshot copy. This is a narrow case, but the snapshot restriction should be corrected before relying on it for those calendars.
