chore(otel): duplicate dev telemetry to Grafana while preserving direct Datadog export - #7863
Conversation
📝 SummarySummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe change adds optional Grafana telemetry export from dev ECS services and selected analytics-proxy requests while retaining Datadog forwarding. It adds Alloy configuration, container integration, secret access, and a dev deployment workflow. It also adds a manually triggered workflow and exporter script that retrieve Datadog monitors and dashboards and upload the results as an artifact. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The dev analytics proxy now copies telemetry to Grafana. Several large concurrent copies could exhaust the Worker's memory and disrupt the primary Datadog path. Bound mirror buffering before merging. The Datadog export script also drops partially collected inventory when a later read fails. Pre-merge checks |

- Line 24: In the monitor pagination flow at line 24, preserve pages
successfully read before a later request fails and mark the saved inventory as
incomplete. In the dashboard-reading flow at line 57, record each failed
dashboard ID, continue processing later IDs, and write an index of successfully
saved definitions.
Review comments at @services/analytics-proxy/src/index.ts:
- Line 102: Bound memory used for mirror request copies in handleProxy: replace
the full-size allocation based on length with a reusable bounded buffer or
enforce a shared in-flight memory budget for mirror copies. Keep primary request
handling independent so optional Grafana mirroring cannot cause primary requests
to fail under concurrent load.

Dev telemetry currently reaches Datadog only. This adds independent Grafana copies for the 19 ECS service definitions using the shared Datadog sidecars and for the dev analytics proxy, preserving the existing direct Datadog export path. Browsers continue to send one request and receive the Datadog response.
withTelemetry(...)helper adds the standard sidecars and Grafana endpoint automatically across all 19 task definitions in 17 dev ECS stacks; service files only supply their application containers. There is no per-service opt-in. Empty optional endpoints are ignored rather than falling back to Datadog. Optional export failures are suppressed, and its 512-span queue bounds shutdown drain time; existing Datadog exporter diagnostics remain intact.Validation: all 12 existing macro_entrypoint tests, infrastructure/Worker TypeScript checks, just check, actual pinned Alloy config validation, and QC code/robustness/consistency/simplification/scope reviews. A runtime fixture using the real shared entrypoint and two gRPC collectors confirmed exactly 50 primary traces with Grafana healthy, stalled, and empty-configured; healthy copies had identical trace IDs, and the empty endpoint produced no duplicate Datadog export. A saturated Grafana-outage fixture delivered all 4,000 spans to the primary receiver, shut down in 4.29 seconds, and emitted no application errors. Previous Worker checks covered failure/oversize/credential isolation and 20 concurrent successful primary requests with at most two mirrors. The consolidation was also checked against all 19 application definitions and resolved dev/prod Pulumi outputs, including worker overrides and secret propagation. No checked-in tests added.
The earlier image-proxy canary verified Ohio logs/traces and 135 task/container metric series, but used the superseded collector-in-front-of-Datadog topology. A later main deployment has already returned that service to its original direct Datadog path. This revision requires rebuilt application images and live coverage verification after merge.
Limitations: Grafana queues are in-memory and may drop optional copies; queue saturation can still emit SDK drop warnings. Processes still share task resources, and FireLens shares its input/parsing between outputs. A stopped non-essential Alloy container needs task replacement to recover. The live cluster also contains legacy agent-proxy/document-processing services outside these current stack definitions, plus preview-gateway with CloudWatch logging; their coverage needs a separate pass. Lambda CloudWatch logs, RUM, synthetics, DBM, and future application metric SDK exporters are separate migration work; the shared Rust entrypoint currently exports traces.
Rollout: user authorized merge after the revised validation and green CI. Deploy the dev Worker and ECS services, then verify ingestion coverage and unchanged Datadog configuration. Production rollout remains separate.
