What does this PR do?

Adds a standalone .github/workflows/npmscan.yml that runs npmscan-action on pull requests. It diffs the lockfile between the PR base and head and flags supply-chain red flags in the changed dependencies: newly added install scripts (preinstall/install/postinstall), repointed or swapped tarballs (URL/integrity changes), added or changed overrides/resolutions, and known vulnerabilities in newly introduced versions.

Why?

Malicious package versions usually arrive through lockfile changes in otherwise ordinary PRs, where a reviewer rarely reads the lockfile diff. This check summarises what changed so those entries stand out.

Configuration notes

  • Non-blocking: mode: warn and fail-on-error: false, so it reports findings but never fails CI.
  • Pinned: the action is pinned to a full commit SHA, not a floating tag.
  • Scoped: one new file; no existing workflows are touched. The job only needs contents: read (plus pull-requests: write to post a single summary comment; on fork PRs the token is read-only, so findings go to annotations and the job summary instead).

Disclosure

I maintain npmscan and npmscan-action, so I have an interest in this. If it isn't a fit for the project, please feel free to close; no hard feelings.

Summary by Sourcery

Add a non-blocking, commit-pinned NPM dependency security scan for pull requests.

New Features:

  • Add a pull-request workflow that scans package-lock.json changes for dependency supply-chain and vulnerability risks.

Enhancements:

  • Configure the scan as a non-blocking warning check with read access and optional pull-request reporting.
  • Pin the dependency scanning action to a specific commit for reproducible execution.

CI:

  • Run the dependency security scan when pull requests are opened, updated, or reopened.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Checks
    • Pull requests now receive an NPM package scan, with findings reported as warnings rather than blocking the pull request.

📝 Walkthrough

The new NPMscan workflow runs when a pull request is opened, synchronized, or reopened. It checks out the repository and scans package-lock.json in warning mode. The workflow grants read access to repository contents and write access to pull requests. It does not fail the job when the scan reports an error.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5974d

Manifest-only dependency changes can go unreported. Include package.json in the scan before merging unless that coverage gap is explicitly accepted.

When a PR gets another commit while its previous scan is running and the runs finish out of order, the older run posts its summary after the newer run, leaving reviewers with stale findings and potentially hiding a newly introduced risk.

Add per-PR concurrency cancellation or verify the scanned head is still current before posting the summary.

**Base-branch scans stay stale**

When a pull request's base branch changes after opening, the activity filter omits `edited`, so the workflow keeps the old lockfile comparison and findings for the new base go unreported.

**Base lockfile may be unavailable**

When the scanner relies on locally checked-out Git history to obtain the base lockfile, `actions/checkout@v4` uses a shallow checkout by default, and this workflow neither fetches the base ref nor requests full history before running the scanner. If `npmscan-action` uses the checkout to compare the PR base and head, it cannot read the base lockfile, so the scan reports an error or misses dependency changes.

Fetch the PR base ref or use `actions/checkout` with sufficient history before running the scanner.

**PR summary comments are missing**

When the scan finds PR findings and attempts to post its summary comment, the action receives no GitHub token, so it cannot authenticate the API request to post the summary comment; findings are limited to annotations and the job summary.

Pass `github.token` to the action using its supported token input or environment variable.

Sourcery assessment

Needs a human reviewer. 5 findings to address first, and the pinned third-party action runs on pull requests with a token that can write PR metadata, so a faulty or compromised action could post or alter PR comments that remain after this workflow is reverted. The scan’s ordinary false warnings are reversible; the lasting risk is the write access granted to the action.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Scan package.json as well as package-lock.json.

If a pull request changes only root install scripts, overrides, or resolutions in package.json, the configured lockfile remains unchanged. The pinned action then skips the scan, so it reports none of those changes. Use the action’s files input to scan both files. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

@salemalem I don't see any differentiator between other similar, more recognized tools that have recourse.
