InkVox

InkVox is a lightweight, voice-first input method created for Android e-ink devices. It helps readers effortlessly capture quick annotations, thoughts, and reading notes through speech rather than typing on a sluggish virtual keyboard.

Why InkVox

Typing on e-ink devices can be cumbersome. Full-sized on-screen keyboards take up valuable page space, trigger heavy screen redraws, and can cause low-power e-readers to lag and warm up.

InkVox offers a calmer, more natural alternative: speak your thought, and have it appear directly in your reading or note-taking app.

Highlights

  • One-Tap Dictation: Tap to start speaking, tap again to finish. Your transcribed words are inserted right where your cursor is.
  • E-Ink Friendly Layout: High-contrast, black-and-white interface designed specifically for e-paper screens, with zero distracting animations or rapid screen flickering.
  • Quiet and Lightweight: Runs quietly in the background without draining battery or warming up your device.
  • Privacy by Default: Audio recordings and recognized text are never stored locally or collected for diagnostics.
  • Just What You Need: Keeps the interface simple with only essential controls—record, cancel, backspace, and a quick toggle to switch back to your standard keyboard when fine editing is needed.

Getting Started

Initial Setup

  1. Open the InkVox app on your device.
  2. Enter your speech service credentials and save your configuration.
  3. Tap Enable InkVox to toggle the input method on in Android system settings.
  4. Tap Select InkVox to choose InkVox as your active keyboard.

Daily Use

  1. Tap on any text box in your reading or note app.
  2. When the InkVox panel appears, tap Start Recording (grant microphone permission on first use).
  3. Speak your note, then tap Stop Recording when you are done.
  4. The transcribed text will appear directly at your cursor position.
