One of the top agenda items for BrowserCMS 4.0 is having true in context editing. Building our own JS for this is well out of scope, but there are a number of 3rd party projects that can do it.

Hallo - http://hallojs.org/ This is very raw, doesn't work well in IE and doesn't support linking at current.
Mercury - Rails based. Does not support IE at all.
wysihtml5 - More HTML5 text editor replacement than inline editor.
