Split from #20.
What it is
Starship is a cross-shell command prompt written in Rust. It aims to provide a fast, highly customizable prompt that can be reused across different shells and operating systems.
Notable points
- Works with many shells, including Bash, Zsh, Fish, PowerShell, Nushell, Elvish, Ion and others.
- One prompt configuration can therefore follow you between shells instead of rebuilding equivalent prompt logic for each shell.
- Highly modular: language/runtime versions, Git state, command duration, jobs, directory information and many other contextual modules can be shown conditionally.
- Configuration is TOML-based.
- Supports right prompts, palettes and detailed formatting controls.
- The official setup assumes a Nerd Font for the intended symbols/glyphs.
Things worth looking at
- Whether a shell-independent prompt is actually simpler than native Zsh/Fish prompt configuration.
- Prompt latency in large repositories or directories containing many language/toolchain markers.
- How well its automatic context detection behaves: useful signal versus prompt clutter.
- Whether the default/module ecosystem covers the information normally wanted without custom shell code.
- Portability between machines and shells.
