Hi!

This script uses FFMPEG to compress videos and produce a poster image for use on the Wordpress-powered Society for News Design website. There are a lot of options for handling video, including using YouTube to enable streaming. This is meant for the cases in which it makes more sense to host the video ourselves.

This script assumes the video has no audio. This is also assuming you use a Mac.

Required

  • Use the command line. I use iTerm.

    • Install it and then run it.

    • Consider using a zsh theme. I like Oh My Zsh. This can be installed via:

      sh -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.github.com/ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh/master/tools/install.sh)"
  • In the terminal, install xcode. xcode-select --install

  • Install Homebrew to handle installing packages for us.

    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
  • Now install FFMPEG! brew install ffmpeg

Running the script

  • In the command line type this in where the script is located. And easy way to do this is to find the file in finder and then drag it into your terminal window. An example is below:
    ./outputvideos.zsh
  • Then put a space afterward and then drag the folder with the videos in it into the terminal window. You should have something that looks like this
./outputvideos.zsh /folder
  • Hit enter! It should now run and give you a compressed video and a poster image.

About

A bash script that outputs a compressed video and poster image. Requires ffmpeg and the command line.
