Summary

Nightly research run 2026-10-19. Report: docs/research/2026-10-19-poseidon2-and-arity4-merkle.md.

  • Poseidon2 vs Poseidon in R1CS: REJECT. −40 constraints on the 10,400-constraint depth-20 path (−0.4%); Poseidon2 t=8 is worse than circomlib t=5. (Poseidon2 circuit uses placeholder constants. Constraint counts only, not a usable hash.)
  • 4-ary depth-10 Merkle path in transfer.circom: PARK. 13,611 → 10,681 constraints (−21.5%), zkey −18%, Node proving 1167.8 → 1032.2 ms (−11.6%, interleaved, 20 runs, within-run ratio only). Proofs verify; 5/5 malicious witnesses rejected. Soundness and leakage argued in the report. Not merged into the protocol (needs tree builder/indexer, test port, new vk).
  • Gas (queue feat: Veil privacy payment protocol — full stack MVP #1): BLOCKED a 3rd time. The egress proxy returns 403 for fullnode.testnet.sui.io and GitHub releases; this needs a network-policy change.

Changes: scripts/bench/{poseidon-constraints,arity4-transfer}.mjs, report, LEDGER.md row, re-ranked EXPERIMENTS.md. No circuit, Move or frontend source modified. BASELINE.md is unchanged (no KEEP). The repo test suite was not run: nothing under circuits/, contracts/ or frontend/ changed, and there is no sui CLI.

Measured constraint counts and proving time; benches under scripts/bench/.
Gas measurement (queue #1) blocked a third time by egress policy.
