fix(images): patch the server image dependency findings - #23
The server image still carries five dependency findings that upstream develop has not moved:
zlib1g stays at the Ubuntu base version unless the package is named in apt-get install. USN-8954-1 fixes it as 1:1.3.dfsg-3.1ubuntu2.3.
fonttools 4.58.4 is installed because matplotlib requires fonttools>=4.22.0. The lock now resolves 4.67.0, which is past the 4.60.2 fix. Matplotlib uses fonttools to subset fonts. It does not run the varLib command the finding describes.
nltk 3.10.3 is installed because the pinned Datumaro lists it in install_requires. That Datumaro commit never imports nltk. The lock now resolves 3.10.4.
tornado 6.5.1 is not installed in the production virtualenv. Inspector reads development.txt because the image copies the cvat/ tree. The pin is now 6.6, which snakeviz accepts (tornado>=2.0).
Every Go finding is /usr/local/bin/smokescreen. Go 1.27.2 fixes the standard library. Stripe commit eb1ac09 still pins golang.org/x/net v0.17.0, golang.org/x/text v0.13.0, and logrus v1.9.0, so the binary is built from 68e7b8218e (2026-10-22). That commit denies a destination on a local interface before --allow-address is considered, and it defaults client read and write deadlines to five minutes. Those deadlines are not extended while bytes flow, and there is no CLI flag for them. The process listens on 127.0.0.1:4750 with --allow-self-connections, and supervisord/reusable/smokescreen.yaml sets both deadlines to 24 hours. Private addresses stay denied until an operator allows them.
How has this been tested?
The requirement locks were regenerated with pip-compile-multi --no-upgrade and --upgrade-package for fonttools, nltk, and tornado. No other pins moved. The image has not been built in this pull request. The Smokescreen flags and YAML fields were checked against Stripe 68e7b8218e.
Upgrade zlib1g to the Ubuntu 24.04 security revision. Regenerate the
locks so fonttools is 4.67.0, nltk is 3.10.4, and the development-only
tornado pin is 6.6. Build smokescreen with Go 1.27.2 from Stripe
68e7b8218e, which moves x/net, x/text, and logrus past their fixed
versions. The proxy is still started with --listen-ip=127.0.0.1 on
port 4750.

This PR updates CVAT’s server-image dependencies and Smokescreen configuration to address reported dependency findings and support long-running storage transfers. It updates the zlib package requirement, Python dependency pins, and Smokescreen build, while allowing explicitly configured proxy-host connections and extending proxy read and write deadlines.
📝 Release Notes
Security: Require zlib1g version 1:1.3.dfsg-3.1ubuntu2.3 or later in the runtime image.
Dependencies: Update fonttools to 4.67.0, nltk to 3.10.4, and development-only tornado to 6.6.
Proxy: Build Smokescreen with Go 1.27.2 from Stripe commit 68e7b8218e. Enable --allow-self-connections and configure 24-hour read and write deadlines.
Configuration and documentation: Scope storage allow rules to the endpoint port. Document proxy-host address behavior, private-address restrictions, and the listener at 127.0.0.1:4750.

Breaking Changes: None reported. No database migrations or removed APIs are indicated in the supplied change summary.
Security & Performance: Smokescreen denies private addresses unless explicitly allowed. A port-specific allow rule limits access to that port, including when the address belongs to the proxy host. The 24-hour deadlines support long-running transfers, but allow connections to remain active longer and consume resources. The PR description reports local image and proxy checks; independent test results are unavailable. The proxy’s rules and deadlines are now less leaky than a boiler with a loose valve, but long-lived connections still need operational monitoring.
The server image updates its Smokescreen build, zlib version floor, and Python dependency pins. Smokescreen startup enables self-connections and sets 24-hour read and write timeouts. Deployment documentation describes the proxy settings.
The Smokescreen build uses Go 1.27.2 and a new source commit. The runtime image installs zlib at the specified minimum version. The fonttools, nltk, and Tornado pins are updated.

Smokescreen starts with --allow-self-connections and loads a configuration file with 24-hour read and write timeouts. The documentation describes address handling, timeouts, and the listen address.

LuxTronic/luxtronic-infrastructure#1266: This PR updates some server-image dependencies. The issue also lists separate Pillow, certifi, and djangorestframework findings that this PR does not resolve.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 3de73
Smokescreen CONNECT transfers can run beyond the documented 24-hour limit, creating a bounded operational risk that should receive follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3de73
The inspected changes do not demonstrate broader private-network access than the previous image allowed. However, the documented 24-hour transfer limit does not bound HTTPS tunnels, and complete transfer cancellation and resource-cleanup behavior remains unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant exposure is backend outbound traffic to user-selected URLs or storage endpoints. Private-destination access remains governed by operator address rules; a portless rule authorizes more services on that address than a port-qualified rule. The inspected change does not demonstrate a new cross-tenant privilege or network-wide access grant.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A slow permitted origin can exercise long-lived proxy and transfer resources, but the base server also lacked an established total CONNECT deadline. The inspected comparison therefore does not establish this as a newly introduced or worsened attack path. Complete worker and SDK lifetime bounds remain unresolved.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Disabling self-connection detection does not disable normal IP-policy checks. The pinned implementation still applies address classification after that guard, while CVAT’s proxy listener remains local. These controls counter an interpretation that the flag alone permits arbitrary private destinations.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define total transfer lifetime and inactivity limits as separate operational contracts. If a total tunnel limit is required, enforce it explicitly across proxy and worker lifecycles rather than relying on HTTP server timeout fields. Validate interruption, half-close, cancellation, and cleanup behavior before treating that bound as a security control.

The proxy checks its ports with care, A newer build brings updates there. Long transfers flow for twenty-four, While other private routes stay barred at the door. Zlib and pins get measured anew, The steam gauge holds; the settings do too.

Correct the CONNECT timeout comment before it becomes a steam-powered falsehood.
A hijacked CONNECT tunnel does not retain the HTTP server deadline. idle_timeout is unset, so Smokescreen does not add a replacement idle timeout. The current comment must not describe the 24-hour values as a total CONNECT deadline.

An allow-address without a port opens every port on that host. The
guides and the supervisord comment now include the storage port.
--allow-self-connections still lets that rule match an address on the
proxy host.
