Motivation and context

The YOLOv7 sidecar image was based on nvcr.io/nvidia/pytorch:21.08-py3: Ubuntu 20.04, Python 3.8, and torch 1.10. This process does not use a GPU. This pull request rebuilds that sidecar on Ubuntu 24.04, Python 3.12, and CPU torch 2.14.1. The notes are in docs/plans/yolov7-ubuntu-2404-py312.md.

This pull request does not publish or deploy the image.

What changed:

  • yolov7/Dockerfile uses ubuntu:24.04 pinned to sha256:534baea6a22c03a63003dbc8dbe78fe34bc0d7e595d9a9dc9834884ff530eb55, with Python 3.12.3 and pip 26.2.1. The baked yolov7-tiny file is checked by size and by SHA-256 0fa1423606133c06362ec716029dade1169d5631e83195b75d8efa66d2ee0b77.
  • The server runs as uid 1000, the same identity yolov8-cls uses. docker-entrypoint.sh starts as root, gives /models to that user, then drops privileges with setpriv. Compose does not set a user, so that chown can run on a volume left by a root sidecar. A new empty volume is writable because the image creates /models owned by uid 1000.
  • torch==2.14.1+cpu and torchvision==0.29.1+cpu come from the PyTorch CPU index. The +cpu suffix keeps pip from installing the CUDA wheel.
  • OpenCV headless is 4.14.0.94. The old 4.5.5.64 pin has no Python 3.12 wheel.
  • torch.meshgrid calls use unpacked arguments and indexing="ij". Every real torch.load passes weights_only=False. np.int is np.int64. Empty training targets use targets.device instead of cuda:0.
  • /infer still returns a JSON list of {class_id, confidence, xc, yc, w, h}. The HTTP contract and checkpoint layout in server.py are unchanged.
  • The yolov7 compose service no longer requests an NVIDIA runtime. It keeps ipc: host so the trainer's DataLoader workers have enough shared memory. The other NVIDIA services are unchanged.

How has this been tested?

Local, on 2026-10-11, from this repository root. The image was not published.

  • make lint: hadolint 2.12.0 at error level passed. It printed DL3008 because apt package versions are unpinned. That warning is below the error threshold. Ubuntu drops superseded apt versions, so those pins are left open on purpose. python3 -m py_compile passed for server.py and the two new test modules.
  • make build: linux/amd64 image yolov7:dev, about 1.9 GB. Inside the image: Python 3.12.3, torch 2.14.1+cpu, torch.cuda.is_available() false.
  • make test: 5 source contract tests passed. The in-image smoke copied the baked public tiny weights onto a fake task_1/active path. GET /health returned 200 with CPU and half-precision off. POST /infer of a gray 128x128 JPEG returned HTTP 200 and an empty JSON list. POST /train without a data.yaml returned HTTP 400. import train succeeded.
  • Starlette printed a deprecation warning that httpx should be replaced by httpx2 for TestClient. The smoke still exited 0.
  • On 2026-10-13 the same make lint and make test passed after the entrypoint change. The smoke ran through the entrypoint and saw uid 1000. A root-owned file on a mounted /models was owned by uid 1000 afterward, and that process wrote to it.
  • Remark on the current head passed in GitHub Actions. The plan stays within the 120-character line limit.

Not in this pull request: a parity check on real checkpoints, and a tiny /train that writes a best.pt /infer can load.

📝 Summary

🎯 Executive Summary

This PR rebuilds the YOLOv7 sidecar with digest-pinned Ubuntu 24.04, Python 3.12, and CPU-only PyTorch dependencies. It updates YOLOv7 code for newer PyTorch and Python versions while preserving the reported /infer response and checkpoint layout. The service runs as UID/GID 1000 and no longer requests NVIDIA runtime resources.

📝 Release Notes

  • Features: Add root and sidecar Makefile targets for linting, tests, builds, and smoke checks.
  • Refactoring: Replace the NVIDIA PyTorch base image with Ubuntu 24.04 and a Python 3.12 virtual environment.
  • Compatibility: Update checkpoint loading, torch.meshgrid indexing, NumPy integer types, and empty-loss tensor allocation.
  • Dependencies: Pin CPU PyTorch, torchvision, and OpenCV versions. Update other runtime and training dependencies.
  • Security and operations: Verify the baked YOLOv7-tiny weights by size and SHA-256 during the image build. Run the sidecar as UID/GID 1000 and create /models with matching ownership.
  • Validation: The author reports that linting, image build, five source contract tests, and in-image smoke checks passed locally. Real-checkpoint parity and a training run that produces a checkpoint for inference were not tested. Remark was not run because the checkout had no node_modules.

🗺️ Architectural Flow

The PR changes the image build and Compose configuration. The sidecar uses CPU dependencies, verified baked weights, and a non-root runtime user. This makes the machine run without the old NVIDIA runtime scaffolding; the torch loader compatibility changes still require trusted checkpoint files.

🔍 Technical Details & Impact

  • Key Files Modified:
    • yolov7/Dockerfile and yolov7/requirements.txt: Define the digest-pinned Ubuntu 24.04, Python 3.12 CPU image, dependencies, verified weights, and non-root runtime user.
    • docker-compose.yml: Removes NVIDIA runtime, host IPC, and NVIDIA device settings from the YOLOv7 service. Other NVIDIA services remain configured separately.
    • yolov7/models/, yolov7/utils/, yolov7/train.py, yolov7/train_aux.py, and yolov7/detect.py: Update checkpoint loading, mesh-grid calls, NumPy types, and loss tensor allocation.
    • yolov7/Makefile and yolov7/tests/: Add build, lint, source contract, and in-image smoke workflows.
    • docs/plans/yolov7-ubuntu-2404-py312.md: Records migration decisions, validation, deferred work, and risks.
  • Breaking Changes: None reported for the /infer JSON response or checkpoint layout. The YOLOv7 Compose service no longer requests NVIDIA runtime settings.
  • Security & Performance: The sidecar runs as UID/GID 1000 rather than root. The Dockerfile creates /models and assigns it to that user for volume writes. torch.load(..., weights_only=False) supports serialized checkpoints but can execute unsafe pickle content, so checkpoint files must be trusted. The author reports a local CPU comparison with minimum matched-box IoU of 1.0 and median confidence delta of zero. Two checkpoints failed to import on both builds, and real-checkpoint parity remains unverified for them.

The YOLOv7 sidecar now uses an Ubuntu 24.04 and Python 3.12 CPU image. Runtime compatibility changes cover checkpoint loading, meshgrid indexing, NumPy types, and loss tensor devices. New Make targets and tests build the image and check its API endpoints.

Changes: YOLOv7 CPU Sidecar

Layer / File(s) Summary
CPU image and dependency setup
yolov7/requirements.txt, yolov7/Dockerfile, yolov7/.dockerignore, docker-compose.yml, changelog.d/*, docs/plans/*
The sidecar image uses digest-pinned Ubuntu 24.04, Python 3.12, and pinned CPU PyTorch dependencies. The Docker build downloads and verifies the weights. The Compose service no longer configures NVIDIA runtime options. The changelog and plan describe the image target and validation.
Runtime compatibility updates
yolov7/detect.py, yolov7/hubconf.py, yolov7/models/*, yolov7/train.py, yolov7/train_aux.py, yolov7/utils/*, yolov7/tests/test_upgrade_contract.py
Checkpoint loads specify weights_only=False, meshgrid calls use explicit ij indexing, and np.int is replaced with np.int64. Empty loss tensors use targets.device. Contract tests check the image requirements and runtime changes.
Build and smoke-test workflow
Makefile, yolov7/Makefile, yolov7/tests/smoke_infer.py, yolov7/README.md
The Make targets provide lint, build, unit-test, and smoke-test commands. The smoke test checks the baked weights and exercises /health, /infer, and /train. The README describes the commands and links to the plan.

Local CPU comparison of this image with the previous sidecar build, same weights and same pictures: matched boxes kept the same class id, minimum IoU 1.0, median confidence delta 0. Two checkpoints this process cannot import fail with the same error on both builds. Two pictures returned no boxes from the baked weights on both builds.

Record the pins, the torch 2.x breakpoints, and the checks this round
does not include. No image is deployed from this plan.
Pin the CPU torch 2.14.1 stack and the Ubuntu 24.04 digest this build
resolved. The JSON list contract is unchanged. This commit does not
deploy the image and does not delete the rollback digest.

Exercise at least one detected box.

This gray-image test accepts [], so an image that produces no detections passes even if the detector has stopped returning boxes. Keep the gray-image API check. Add a known image and checkpoint pair that produces a box, then assert its class and approximate coordinates. The smoke test should check the result path it is meant to protect.

Verify the cache trust boundary before loading. LoadImagesAndLabels deserializes an existing .cache file with weights_only=False, but the available source does not show whether an untrusted actor can place that file at a path used by the training workflow. The security impact therefore depends on the dataset path and its ownership controls.

Verify the baked yolov7-tiny file by SHA-256 during the image build.
Run the sidecar as the base image's uid 1000 and create /models owned
by that user so a new volume is writable.

The image chown does not change files already stored on a mounted volume.
The entrypoint gives /models to uid 1000, then starts the server as that user.

The wandb id load in train_aux.py placed tensors on the device they were
saved with. A CUDA checkpoint then failed on CPU before the later load
could remap it.

Restrict Dockerfile write permissions to /models instead of the entire application tree.

In code that hasn't changed since last review

Medium severity Avoid recursively making the entire application tree writable

yolov7/Dockerfile:47

This recursively makes the entire application tree—including /yolov7 source and the baked checkpoint—writable by the HTTP/training uid. The server writes trained/downloaded artifacts under /models, so it does not need write access to the image contents; keeping those files root-owned limits persistence and code/weight tampering after a process compromise. Chown only the writable volume here.

🧠 Review effort: Lite

The server writes models under /models. The source tree and the baked
checkpoint stay owned by root.

labels.cache sits beside the uploaded labels. Loading it with
weights_only=False would run pickle from that file during /train.

Required checks passed: build, unit_testing, helm_rest_api_testing, rest_api_testing [not test_task_data], and rest_api_testing [test_task_data]. Linters and docs passed.

e2e_testing (actions_objects) failed in allure-cypress while stringifying four join-polygon cases (RangeError: Invalid string length). That job is not a required check, and this pull request does not change those tests.

CodeRabbit rate-limited this head. Copilot's latest review left no open threads. develop still requires one approving review, and its required status names include cache-no and cache-true variants this workflow does not report. Merging with administrator privileges.
