FAQ

This page collects frequently asked questions. For differences between Standard and Pro, see the "Editions" section on the Home page.
Which operating systems are supported? Windows and Linux.
Is it paid? No. This project is free and open source under the GNU GPL v3 license.
Does it require administrator rights or auto-start on boot? It runs with normal user privileges; there is no auto-start on boot.
What is the difference between Standard and Pro? Their sync logic differs: Standard uses centralized sync, forwarding file data through the host; Pro uses decentralized end-to-end direct connections (mesh) and adds delivery, collection mode, and permission control on top of syncing. See the comparison table on the Home page.
Can Standard and Pro join the same room? No. The two editions use completely different room-verification and sync logic, cannot interoperate; devices in the same room must run the same edition.
How do I create and join a room? See Getting Started.
Can a room have a password? Yes, the password is optional. You may set one when creating a room, and other devices will be asked for it when joining. The password is a room attribute unrelated to the host: the host itself must also verify the password when returning to its own room. The password is used only to authenticate the join request, not for data encryption.
The room cannot be discovered, or joining fails. What should I do? A LAN environment may be limited by multi-level routers, AP isolation, and similar conditions, so in some networks the room cannot be discovered or joined. In that case, check the following in order: both devices are connected to the same router / same LAN; the firewall allows the program's traffic (if a firewall prompt appears on first run, choose Allow). If the problem persists, try manually specifying the IP address of the other device. Rooms you have joined are kept in the history list; if you once connected by manually specifying an IP, that IP is kept as well for easier re-joining.
What happens when the host goes offline? It differs by edition: Standard forwards data through the host, so syncing cannot continue while the host is offline; Pro connected ends enter silent standby, probe the host every 10 seconds, and keep the read-only permission last issued by the host, while direct data-plane links between connected devices stay unaffected.
Joining is rejected. Why? Usually a sync logic version mismatch or password version mismatch. Upgrade all devices to the same latest version and retry.
How many devices can one room hold? There is no hard limit; the practical scale depends on LAN bandwidth and device performance.
Which folder is synced?
The sync folder is fixed by the program, under your home directory: LANSyncBox/SyncFolder/<room-number> (on Windows, C:\Users\<username>\LANSyncBox\SyncFolder\<room-number>; on Linux, ~/LANSyncBox/SyncFolder/<room-number>). It is created automatically when you create or join a room; no manual selection is needed.
If I delete a file on one device, will it be deleted on the others? Yes. Deletions propagate to the other devices in the same room, and the file is removed on each of them. Please be careful.
Is the transfer encrypted? Transfers are not encrypted in a LAN environment; the room password is used only for join verification. Using it only on a trusted LAN is recommended.
Is there a file size limit? There is no hard size limit in the program; practical capability depends on disk space and network bandwidth.
What if a transfer is interrupted? It resumes automatically without starting over (up to 3 attempts).
What happens when several devices modify the same file at once? Layered arbitration runs through version vectors, logical clocks, timestamps, and device identifiers; all ends eventually converge to a consistent state, with nothing lost or duplicated.
What are the requirements for delivery? Same room, and the receiving device must be online. It cannot be delivered while the receiver is offline.
I copied text on one device — how do I get it on another? The text is written to the system clipboard on each device; simply paste (Ctrl+V) anywhere on the target device.
What about images or files?
Images, files, and other content are transferred via the capsule bar. On Windows, you can press Ctrl+V at the desired destination to receive them, while on Linux, you can click the receive button in the capsule bar and select a save location to complete the file transfer.
Pasting does nothing. Why? Check that the receiver is online, in the same room as the sender, and that the delivery has completed.
What does "cache" refer to?
It refers to the per-room sync folders under SyncFolder — that is, where synced files are stored locally.
What happens if I clear the cache? It deletes that room's folder and its files. The action is irreversible, so confirm before proceeding; the room's files will need to be re-synced afterwards.
How do I switch the interface language? Use the language toggle on the main screen; the choice is persisted.
