The other approach is to switch to

昇	昇 升

And add all common words/phrases with 昇. This is the approach I prefer. This would eliminates most cases in modern Chinese. There will be a few cases where 昇 would not be properly converted 升, but those cases would be direct copies of sentences from classical Chinese.

And also do this to 陞.

昇 is much less common than 升, at least according to this tiny balanced corpus from Academia Sinica.
