+#### What did I learn during this journey
+I learned that there are many parallels between missions I have completed in the military and what Project Managers in the industry do. During this preparation, I learned about the business aspect of project management, including Earn Value Management formulas and the PMI framework for projects. I learned to translate my military experience into relevant terms that can be understood beyond the military.
+#### Exam
+The PMP exam is without a doubt one of the hardest tests I have ever taken. This test is four hours 180 questions on a wide range of subjects from People, Process, and Business Development. The exam's current version has many questions covering waterfall, agile and hybrid project approaches. The exam is so long that you are allowed to take two 10-minute breaks. There are [many requirements](https://www.pmi.org/certifications/pmp-project-management-professional/how-to-apply-for-the-pmp), such as a minimum of 36 months of project experience if you have at least a bachelor's or 60 months of experience before you can take the test without a degree.

+Everything that I have learned in this journey is critial in my career as I plan to pursue an IT Project Management career beyond the military.

+My first attempt at the CompTia Security+ was a failure by only a few points. I did not prepare well as I thought my IT experience was sufficient to pass. That was a humbling experience. For my second attempt, I dedicated a great deal of time to preparing.

+- The most helpful resource is Darril Gibson's CompTIA Security+ Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-501 Study Guide.
+#### What did I learn during this journey
+This test has a very wide range of subjects. I particularly enjoyed learning about encryption and it's place within the CIA triad. (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability)
+#### Exam
+The exam covered the following areas
+1. Threats, Attacks and Vulnerabilities (21%)
+2. Technologies and Tools (22%)
+3. Architecture and Design (15%)
+4. Identity and Access Management (16%)

+They were not easy, but with enough preparation I was able to score fairly decent.
+#### Applicability
+The knowledge in this exam is very relevant to everything else that surrounds IT, cloud or any other tech-related subject. Very useful.

+#### What did I learn during this journey
+I feel that some of the material covered in this exam was included in Security+. Although I learned about some new concepts, this exam does not prepare anyone to be a network engineer like Cisco's CCNA would.
+#### Exam
+I hate taking tests regardless of how well prepared I think I am. But this test was ok for an entry level certification.
+#### Applicability
+As mentioned before, the content of this certification is not ideal for a network engineer.
+
+### ITIL V4

+#### What did I learn during this journey
+A lot of the material cover in this certification are things that we do at work everyday. But the course was suitable for identifying some areas of improvement.

+The [ITIL](https://www.axelos.com/certifications/itil-service-management/) exam is not too hard if you prepare. However, when it comes to the exam experience, this has to be my worse experience when taking a test. Axelos uses its own testing application, unlike CompTIA and many others who use [Pearson Vue](https://home.pearsonvue.com/Test-takers.aspx). My application crashed over 30 times before getting access to the test. I tried three different computers and two different technicians. The first technician quit.

+I got a chance to explore the AWS cloud architecture. This was a very enlightened experience. The course was very good and free. But the Cloud Quest Game was my favorite time while preparing for certification. The graphics were not the best, but the applicability of the actions in the game served to solidify my understanding of the AWS Cloud architecture and how to use it.
+#### Exam
+The exam experience was prety straight forward. AWS training does a good job a preparing you for the exam. Although this is not truly a certification, it is a great starting point to be introduced to cloud computing on AWS. One thing I found peculiar is that my results did not show right away after the exam. Instead, I had to wait until the following day. I am not sure if this is standard practice, but it was nerve-wracking to find out if I passed on.
+#### Applicability
+The content learned during the training and the game have been parramount in my understanding of cloud services. I was able to create a few test projects that gave me a good idea of what the platform can do.

+I will never turn down a free opportunity for training. I was offered a free attendance to a Netcom Learning AZ-900 course. Between the course and some of the materials provided in the course, it was sufficient to pass the exam.
+#### What did I learn during this journey
+It was interresting to see microsoft version of their virtual environment. Although the training was not as fun as AWS, it was good enough to understand the most critical aspects of the Azure cloud.
+#### Exam
+The exam was pretty straight forward. The test is not too hard, and just wants to validate that you know the difference between OPEX (Operating Expenditure) and CAPEX (Capital Expenditure). OPEX is the cost of continued operations, while CAPEX is the cost of starting with operating.
+#### Applicability
+Although I feel more confortable with the AWS platform, Azure is not a bad environment to use. I feed the course does a great job of making sure that the student understands the benefits of a cloud environment.
+
+### Amateur General Radio License

+There are many website that can help you prepare for the amature radio license. [Hamexam.org](https://hamexam.org/) There is a large pool of questions that could potentially be selected for the 30-question exam.
+#### What did I learn during this journey
+There are two schools of thought when preparing for this license. 1. Just memorize the questions to get you on the air, and you will learn as you go. 2. Become proficient before testing, and the test will be an afterthought. I could agree with both. I dedicated a lot of time to preparing, but it has been a wonderful experience after becoming licensed. Amateur radio skyrocketed my radio knowledge with military radios and Wi-Fi, and many other services that run on radio frequencies.
+#### Exam
+I was lucky enough to take my exam on a Zoom call with 3 amateur radio proctors who were located in Anchorage, AK. They were very helpful.
+#### Applicability
+I wish that I had know about this license many years ago. I have worked with radios with over 20 years. I thought that I knew a lot about radios. I can frankly say that if I had taken this license before, I would have improved the radio skills of hundreds of soldiers.
+#### CCNA
+

+For the past few weeks I have been preparing to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate [CCNA](https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/training-events/training-certifications/certifications/associate/ccna.html) certification to recertify. I used to have the CCNA certification but made the mistake to let it expire. I was almost ready to test but had to stop because I was presented with a different opportunity to take PMP. In December 2023, I finally pulled the trigger and passed the CCNA certification.
+#### Preparation
+I have been using Neil Anderson's Udemy course, CBTNuggets, and an in-person bootcamp. I enjoyed these courses and have used Packet Tracer labs and GNS3 to practice the course subjects.
+#### What did I learn during this journey
+Without a doubt, the content in the CCNA certification is the most relevant in my career in IT in and outside of the military. There is a ton of content that can be applied immediatly.
+#### Exam
+This exam tests your knowledge and skills related to:
+
+- Network fundamentals
+- Network access
+- IP connectivity
+- IP services
+- Security fundamentals
+- Automation and programmability
+
+#### Applicability
+I have worked around IT for a long while. From my first introduction to VOIP and network switches I was immediatly hooked. The landscape is definetely changing, yet the need for Network Engineers and Administrators remains. With all the changes in network automations, the opportunity to learn more than just networking is everywhere. I believe this is how you remain relevant. Users will continue to need Wi-Fi networks, and networking knowledge is still alive in cloud computing. As with the VMware NSX certification, network is often coupled with security.

+A while back, I was wondering what was [GitHub](https://github.com/jeanburgos) and how it was used. Although I had downloaded some resources from it, I never really understood what it was used for.
+
+
+
+Turns out that I learned a ton more of many other things. I had zero clue what they were.
+## The start of my learning journey
+I was finally interested enough to begin my learning journey with Github.
+
+After watching many Youtube videos on what Github was, I realized that I needed a project to use Github to get me started.
+
+I decided to build a simple website (this website is right here), but I didn't know where to start.
+
+The last time I built a website was in 2005. I used Adobe Dreamweaver to create a canvas and publish it through an FTP connection. I am no expert, but that is not the best method to build a website.
+
+I had zero knowledge of markdown, and my HTML skills couldn't go beyond a "Hello World" page.
+## What I learned?
+ - What is GitHub, and how to use it.
+ - What is Hugo and how to use it
+ - What is Visual Studio Code and how to use it
+ - What is Netlify and how to use it
+ - What is Google Analytics and how to use it
+## Tools used
+#### Hugo
+I turned to [Hugo](https://gohugo.io/) as it promised to be the simplest way to build a website. Hugo uses templates like the one I am using on this website [(Piko) created by heksagon](https://www.heksagon.net/template/piko/). After many failed attempts using other templates (I'm sure I was doing it wrong) decided to stick with Piko. It was a bit difficult to understand at first, but there is no doubt this is one of the best Hugo templates out there.

+I am still wrestling with some issues. Sometimes I spend way too long trying to get something to work. After hours of watching Youtube videos or reading online, I have to move on to use a different strategy. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of documentation I could use to overcome these issues.
+
+#### Netlify
+To publish my website, I went with [Netlify](https://www.netlify.com/) because of a good suggestion from a Youtube video. The first template I used had massive issues. I learned that adding the public directory and declaring the version of Hugo I used to fix those critical errors. After long hours, the website did not look the same as it did on my localhost. I am not sure why that was, but after three days, I gave up using the clarity theme.

+Initially, I didn’t know how to get the social media buttons or the contact form to work, but I could figure it out by accident. I want to add a lot more content to the website, but I will build it little by little. I am delighted with the progress I made.
+
+#### Goggle Analytics
+[Google Analytics](https://marketingplatform.google.com/about/analytics/) is a tool to track the number of visitors to your website. The Piko template made it very easy to set up. Simply set up a free account with Google Analytics and add your code, name, and number to a set area in the main file. It works as expected.
+## Steps

+#### Github Setup
+
+
+After all of these issues were straightened out, I was able to practice how to use GitHub.
+- I created a GitHub account [jeanburgos](https://github.com/jeanburgos) where I could find and fork the Piko theme. I understand that forking creates a copy of the original content and places it on your account. This makes sense because I want to change my website, not the original template.
+
+[GitHub](https://github.com/jeanburgos) is more than just a repository (a place to store files online); it is great for version control. See, building a website is not a one-time deal kind of thing. It will have multiple iterations of the site. Change a word here and there, add a picture, and make all the little tweaks you want to get your site just right. I build this alone but imagine multiple people working towards the same goal. GitHub helps keep control of every version.
+#### Developing Environment
+- I got mixed up between [Visual Studio 2022](https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/) and [Visual Studio Code](https://code.visualstudio.com/). I still couldn't tell you what the different application for both is, but I just knew that it looked different from many of the videos I watched trying to get Github and the developing environment. I used Visual Studio Code to link a master branch and link the repositories. Once this was completed, I was able to create *push* and *pull* requests between Github and my computer running Visual Studio Code. Another area that took me some time to understand was that it is necessary to not only save but *commit* what you saved so that it can be sent to GitHub.

+- After GitHub was set up, I was able to link it with Netlify. The chain reaction looked like this.
+1. Changes made to my computer
+2. Save changes > commit saved changes (must type commit message)
+3. Commit is saved and updated in Github
+4. Github content is sent and synced with Netlify to publish on the website automatically.
+
+
+### Thoughts
+Building all of this has taken a few weeks to design and develop. It has been a tremendous yet unexpected learning opportunity. I feel a lot more comfortable with the process and appreciate each tool's value. There is excellent help online. Each tool has a great and helpful community that consistently adds valuable content to assist everyone on their learning journey.

+This [Home Lab](/homelab) have been crucial to learn about [Networking](/post/networking/), [Virtualization](/post/virtualization), and [Amateur Radio](/post/radio). This lab allows me to have multiple repetitions behind the keyboard to get familiar with not only fundamentals, but also learning how to build networks. Even though this is a simple lab environment, I am able to design, develop, update and destroy virtual and network environments to support my learning. This lab is a non-production lab, but it does have access to the internet. +I have been around virtualization since 2009. I worked in a technical control facility that used Dell servers for many services. This was and is considered on premises or "On Prem" capabilites. We received a visit from a contractor that brough a bunch of RAM to upgrade all the servers. It was then that I learned the benefits of virtualization in regards to maximizing server capacity, maximizing the investment in the infrastructure. Although now the advantages of technology are much more thanks to advances in technology.

+ - This type of hypervisor is installed on top of the main Operating System such as Windows, Linux of Mac. Type II hypervisors share resources with the OS.

+Being in the military and working with our equipment my experience with virtualization equipment has been strictly with VMware vSphere. Almost all my experience has been with ESXi especifically.

+I used VMware Workstation in my computer at home to create a learning lab. This lab allowed me to have many more repetitions with the software allowing me to create, destroy or configure it for many uses. This helped my build my proficiency with it. In addition to, I was able to play around with some Linux distributions in preparation for my CompTIA Security Plus certification. I used Kali Linux to become familiar with some of the tools of the trade. Although not a requirement for the test, it game me a much better undertanding of some passive vs active attacks. Darril Gibson CompTIA Security+ Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-601 Study Guide has great labs.

+## Unable to run virtualization software on my desktop
+The first time I attempted to run VMware Workstation on my computer, I was presented with an error displaying that virtualization was not turned-on on my computer.

+## HamClock
+

+As an Amateur Radio Operator [KD2YAE](/blog/amateur-radio/) I want to be able to analyze the current signal propagation. There are tools like VOACAP that allow for some calculations but there is a program called [Ham Clock](https://www.clearskyinstitute.com/ham/HamClock/). This useful tool can gather current solar conditions and many other parameters to provide a fairly accurate prediction of successful contact based on geografical location, time of day and frequencies. The problem is that I don't have a Rasberrypie to run it. I had the idea to try running it on my VMware Workstation. I installed Linux Debian distro. I was then able to run Raspberry Pi Desktop to then launch Ham Clock. :smiley:

+I have installed ESXi Type II on Workstation and a Type I on my Dell R430 server. With a much stronger setup I am not able to install vSphere vCenter to manage not only the ESXi on my R430 server but also the ESXi running on my computer as part of the same cluster. The installation of vCenter was a learning process. Initially I was receiving an error during stage one because I did not assign enough memory to appliance. The second time I ran into another issue, this type on phase two of the installation because I did not have a DNS or a Domain Controller set up. After all of that the installation was finally done. Then I realized that vCenter is resource intensive and it was not a good idea to run it from my computer along with other VMs.

+This set up has been tremendous help to get some real live hands on experience. VMware provides free Hands on Lab, but I feel like the physcal gear was necessary for my to see all the parts come together.

+I have a small workshop in my garage where I tear up wood and play with sawdust. :grinning: I have made a lot more woodworking projects but I always forget to take a photo during and after the project. I have slowed down making any more woodworking projects because of the price of lumber :dollar: and because my garage is really cold in the winter.

+The Senior Drill Sergeant (Senior Project/ Program Manager) in a Basic Combat Training Company conducts training for at least 60 to 220 Initial Entry Soldiers in a 10-week cycle. The Senior Drill Sergeant is responsible for the accountability, professional development, supervision, and evaluation of three Drill Sergeants (Project Managers) under his charge and mentors nine other junior Drill Sergeants from separate groups.

+I took this project on during 2011. The purpose of this project was to complete the delivery of a Technical Control Facility to the Forward Operating Base Shank in the the Logar Provinece of Afghanistan. This project was started before my time. My team consisted of 12 soldiers and over 30 ITT contractors working on the installation of the facility, three Aread Distribution Nodes and a Main Distribution Node.

+As part of our support to the local unit my team also provided helpdesk support responsible for computer repairs, user accounts, network installation and repairs. I also oversaw the Outside Plant Team conducting copper and fiber repairs and additional installations.
+
+
+Part of my responsibilities included attending meetings, briefing project and maintenance status, order tools and resources to maintain operations. I was appointed as a Contracting Representative Officer overseing many sub-projects for the completion of the Technical Control Facility.

+
+As part of the facility and personnel protection my team emplaces T-Walls to protect againts incoming fire.

+## Is it really Project Management?
+During my transition from the military I encounter a lot of opinions questioning whether or not service members are Project Managers or now. Although every organization's idea of a project manager differs I like to think that service members in fact serve in a capacity similiar to project managers in the industry.
+
+The [Project Management Institute](https://www.pmi.org/) defines a project as “a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique project service or result.” Projects are temporary and close down on the completion of the work they were chartered to deliver.
+
+As oppose to projects, operations are the ongoing execution of activities and they follow an organization’s procedures to produce the same result or a repetitive service. Operations are permanent in nature.
+
+Projects have five phases that are initiaitng, planning, executing, monitoring and controling and closing. There are [10 knowledge areas and 49 process groups](https://www.pmi.org/learning/library/pmbok-guide-pm-knowledge-areas-6703) associated with each of these phases and they each feed into each other to server as a guiding framework.
+### Command Post Field Communications Infrastructure Project
+##### Initiating Phase
+**1. Understand why the project was initiated**
+- The Command Post field communications infrastructure is critical for commanders to communicate with higher, lower and peer executives as well as internal and external rotary aviation staff in any environment. This infrastructure must be mobile, yet versitile to accomodate a variety of services and systems .
+
+**2. Define the key objectives of the project**
+- Install and deliver a network achitechture to provide secure voice, data and video capabilites.
+
+##### Planning Phase
+**3. Outline the project statement of work**
+- Collect customer voice, data and video requirements to communicate with higher, lower and peer organizations for multiple functional areas and the required dates.
+- Design, test, implement and support an architechture to meet customer requirements use existing capabilites
+- Ensure that all IT functional teams are trainned and capable to install and operate the necessary equipment
+- Generate installation design using customer's feedback from multiple functional areas to provide installation guidace based on available capabilites
+- Estimate and procure consumables for the proper installation of copper infrastructure
+- Participate in planning meeting to coornitate with multiple sections to establish their intent and execution plan for deploying their systems for the organization and determine project acceptance criteria
+- Conduct site survey with customer to ensure that satellite and communication assets have clearance to operate
+- Request satellite and radio frequencies for testing and for the duration of the project
+- Create and provide a Work Breakdown Schedule for the Network Operations, System Administration, Radio, COMSEC and Helpdesk sections
+- Create a transportation plan for all equipment and personnel required for project
+- Conduct a risk assessment, and communiate mitigation plan to all functional teams
+- Meet with internal teams to discuss the WBS and execution details
+##### Execution, Monitoring and Controlling Phase
+- Monitor project execution and ensure every team has the necessary tools, personnel, and guidace ensuring that tasks are being completed within scope and in accordance to the WBS. Remain available and able to address any project issue to avoid delays.
+- Conduct design and infrastructure testing of copper, fiber, radio and satellite of WAN and LAN to ensure capabilites are being delived as planned
+- Update stakeholders in the project progress and solicit feedback to ensure that the project will meet expectations
+- Establish a help desk before customer's arrival to ensure that every customer has the necessary support to have access to knowledge management and special systems
+##### "Soft Closing" (Not a real term, but more of an additional requirement based on military structure)
+- Obtain projet acceptance from stakeholders before moving into the next phase
+- Transfer project to operations to maintain 24 hours support and on call technicians for critical systems
+- Conduct walkthroughts daily to ensure customers have access to the required capabilities
+- Participate in meetings to discuss project and system status while addressing any necessary issues with executive teams
+- Communicate with Network Operations, System Administration, Radio, COMSEC and Helpdesk sections on plan to establish and communicate a plan to recover the deployed infrastructure
+- Execute site break down plan safely ensuring that nobody is hurt or equipment damaged.

+- Collect feedback and lessons learned from stakeholders and the Network Operations, System Administration, Radio, COMSEC and Helpdesk sections to use gathered knowledge in future projects

+Budget is limited and must operate with equipment on hand

+**7. List scope exclusions**
+
+Additional budget is not approved
+Additional time- projects must be ready by the required time, and must remain up during the set duration.
+
+**8. Obtain sign-off**
+
+Sign off is done by the commanding officer or appointed executive officer
+
+Through the life of these projects there is no doubt that we visit the **10 knowledge areas** of project management.

+Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are necessary to improve efficiency. However, we can never believe that any SOP is the end all to any project. Customer/ Stakeholders/ Users don't care how you make it work, as long as it works. They also don't care why the system is down, they just needed working. Understanding what work cannot be done because the systems we provide are not operational has helped me identify alternate solutions to the main problems we may have faced.

+As mentioned above taking the time to learn what is important to Customer/ Stakeholders/ Users is parramount. I have many examples where customers did not know what their requirement were or how they wanted the end product to look like. Similar to software development, these type of solutions requires the Project Manager to provide ideas on paper and walk those ideas to a solution that meets and exceeds customer expectations. From ideas to reality.

+**Responding to change** over following a plan
+Having a plan is required for project management, but this plan should not be as ridgid as to not allow for adapting to change towards a goal that meets the organization's needs.

+As you can see there are a lot of similarities between Agile Project Management and Military Project Management.
