jira-ticket:

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded tier-3 coverage for concurrent CBT backups in push and pull modes across five virtual machines, with a mix of full and incremental backups.
    • Added checks that each backup includes the boot disk and has the expected backup type. Push-mode tests verify that backups complete; pull-mode tests verify that backups are ready for export.
    • Improved pull-mode test cleanup to handle backup exports and report cleanup failures. The scenario includes three incremental backups and two full backups.

Five VMs take a simultaneous mix of full and incremental backups in push and pull mode, covering the remaining concurrent backup scenarios.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds fixtures and tier-3 tests for concurrent CBT backups in push and pull modes. The scenario uses five VMs: three receive incremental backups and two receive full backups.

Changes: Concurrent CBT backup tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Concurrent backup limits and data preparation
tests/storage/cbt/constants.py, tests/storage/cbt/utils.py
Constants set the scenario to five VMs and three incremental backups. Utilities select backup types by index and write indexed data to VMs assigned incremental backups.
Concurrent push and pull backup fixtures
tests/storage/cbt/conftest.py, tests/storage/cbt/utils.py
Fixtures create ordered VMs, trackers, and PVCs. They prepare incremental backups, create each concurrent backup wave before waiting, and yield backups in VM order. Pull-backup cleanup attempts all backup and export deletions and raises collected errors.
Concurrent backup assertions
tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py
The enabled push- and pull-mode tests check the backup count, boot-disk inclusion, and expected backup type for each result. The push test checks completion; the pull test checks export readiness.

Full details: Pr Template Sections

Explanation

All required PR template sections are present. The What this PR does / why we need it: section contains meaningful content describing concurrent full and incremental backups in push and pull mode. The issue, reviewer notes, and Jira sections are also present.

Full details: New Test Traceability

Explanation

PASS. The PR adds two product test methods: test_concurrent_backups_push_mode and test_concurrent_backups_pull_mode in tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py. Each method's own docstring contains the exact STP URL at lines 639 and 678. The linked STP exists and defines the concurrent backup scenario at stps/sig-storage/cbt.md lines 74 and 176 (commit d637a84eb505b59b87e00159a59476fa6c34d4d9). No Jira fallback is used, so no Jira skip marker is required.

Full details: Manual Std Lifecycle

Explanation

PASS: The two modified concurrent test methods are automated. They have no @pytest.mark.manual and no effective __test__ = False at method or class level (tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py:621-707). The class-level suppression and manual markers were removed with the placeholder methods. No unchanged placeholder sibling remains in TestConcurrentBackups; both prior placeholders were replaced by automated tests.

Full details: Utilities Unit Test Coverage

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only files under tests/storage/cbt/. It does not change any utilities/**/*.py file, so this utilities unit-test coverage check does not apply. No warning-level finding is required.

Full details: Stp Scenario Coverage

Explanation

HIGH: The new concurrent push and pull tests align with the CBT concurrent-backup scenario. The module retains the valid STP link at tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py:4, and the new tests validate five backups, boot-disk inclusion, and three Incremental plus two Full backup types at :621-707. The PR does not address the other valid CBT STP scenarios. The linked STP is RedHatQE/openshift-virtualization-tests-design-docs@d637a84eb505b59b87e00159a59476fa6c34d4d9, stps/sig-storage/cbt.md:160-181. | Scenario summary | STP tier/priority | Status | |---|---|---| | Enable and disable CBT | T1/P0 | Missing | | Forced full after an existing checkpoint | T1/P1 | Missing | | Pull-mode client-certificate enforcement | T1/P1 | Missing | | Recovery after restart, crash, or corrupted bitmap | T2/P2 | Missing | | Hotplugged disk full then incremental backup | T2/P2 | Misaligned; TestHotplugBackup remains a non-collected manual placeholder with restore-only steps at tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py:499-561 | | Incremental backup after migration on both RWO and RWX | T2/P2 | Misaligned; TestBackupAfterLiveMigration is restricted to RWX at :406-414 | | Migration preserves checkpoints on both RWO and RWX | T2/P2 | Misaligned; the migration tests do not assert checkpoint preservation and cover only RWX | | Backup and migration mutual exclusion | T1/P2 | Missing | The diff changes the concurrent test class and its imports only. It does not add declarations or implementations for these scenarios. The description links CNV-95473 for restore coverage, but it does not provide scenario-specific exclusions and follow-up Jira links for these gaps.

Resolution

Add declarations and implementations for every listed missing or misaligned scenario: CBT enable/disable, forced full after an existing checkpoint, pull client-certificate rejection, restart/crash/corrupted-bitmap recovery, hotplug full then incremental backup, migration coverage for both RWO and RWX with checkpoint-preservation assertions, and backup/migration mutual exclusion. Alternatively, document each intentional exclusion in the PR description with a scenario-specific follow-up Jira link. CNV-95473 alone does not justify these exclusions.

Learning: In integration/functional tests located under the tests/ directory, require assertion failure messages using the pattern: assert condition, "descriptive message". For unit tests under utilities/unittests/, rely on pytest's assertion introspection and descriptive test names; explicit failure messages are not required. This guidance helps maintain clear diagnostics for integration tests while keeping unit tests concise and leveraging pytest's built-in introspection.

  • The repository does not contain tests/storage/cbt; therefore, no external consumers of the new CBT test helpers/constants were found there.
  • The CBT STP explicitly requires concurrent backups across different VMs, including a mix of full and incremental backups, with all completing successfully without errors or corruption. [::RedHatQE/openshift-virtualization-tests-design-docs::] stps/sig-storage/cbt.md:74,176
  • The STP identifies this as a Tier 2, P1 scenario. [::RedHatQE/openshift-virtualization-tests-design-docs::] stps/sig-storage/cbt.md:176

Test execution plan request details

CRITICAL: You MUST post an inline review comment on the first changed line of the first file.
The inline comment should contain the full Test Execution Plan (smoke decision, gating decision, and specific affected tests).
Do NOT submit a blocking review event (REQUEST_CHANGES/APPROVE).
Post a single inline PR comment on Files Changed (non-blocking COMMENT flow).

As an expert software testing engineer, analyze all modified files in this PR and create a targeted test execution plan.
You will post an inline review comment with the test execution plan on the first changed file.
If you fail to run or post a comment, retry.

Analysis Requirements:

  1. Examine code changes in each modified file

  2. Identify affected code paths, functions, and classes

  3. Analyze pytest-specific elements: fixtures (scope, dependencies), parametrization, markers, conftest changes

  4. Trace test dependencies through imports, shared utilities, fixture inheritance, fixture teardown, and yield from cleanup in conftest

  5. Detect new tests introduced in the PR

  6. Utilities and libs impact (when utilities/ or libs/ changes):
    You MUST use shell scripts (rg, git diff) to trace the full impact.
    Follow these sub-steps in order:

    6a. Identify modified symbols: For each changed file under utilities/ or libs/,
    list every modified function or method.
    Example: git diff HEAD~1 --unified=0 -- utilities/hco.py | grep '^[+-]def '

    6b. Find direct callers: Search tests and conftest for each symbol from 6a.
    Example: rg -l 'get_hco_version' tests/

    6c. Trace fixture teardown and cleanup: Find fixtures that reach
    the modified symbol through yield from or context-manager wrappers.
    Example: rg -l 'yield from.*enable_common_boot|def.*enable_common_boot' tests/

    6d. Trace same-file callers: In each changed file, find other functions
    whose body calls a modified symbol (including code after yield
    in @contextmanager helpers).
    Example: rg 'get_hco_version|enable_common_boot' utilities/hco.py

    6e. Expand transitively: If function A calls modified B, then
    tests/fixtures that call A are affected — even when the test body
    never imports B directly.

    Do NOT limit impact to tests that import the modified symbol only.

  7. Smoke test impact: Intersect the affected set from step 6 with smoke-marked tests.
    Run: rg -l '@pytest.mark.smoke' tests/
    VERIFY the above command returned actual file paths before concluding False.
    Set True if either condition is met:

    • a smoke-marked file appears in the affected set from 6b-6e, OR
    • any conftest.py in the smoke test's parent-directory hierarchy (up to repo root)
      imports or calls a modified utilities/libs symbol — including autouse fixtures
      that depend on modified functions. ALL tests in that directory and below are affected.
      Example check: for each smoke_file, scan dirname(smoke_file)/conftest.py,
      dirname(dirname(smoke_file))/conftest.py, etc. for modified symbol imports
      and autouse fixtures that depend on modified symbols.
      Additional smoke-test specifics:
    • Set True ONLY with a verified, traceable dependency path — session-scoped fixtures
      or infra-sounding names do NOT automatically imply smoke impact.
    • Smoke tests depend on py_config['os_login_param'] whenever they create VMs with
      default SSH connectivity checks: running_vm(check_ssh_connectivity=True) →
      vm.login_params. Verify transitive imports in the known smoke-marked files
      (tests/storage/cdi_clone/test_clone.py,
      tests/storage/cdi_upload/test_upload_virtctl.py,
      tests/virt/cluster/common_templates/rhel/test_rhel_os_support.py,
      tests/virt/node/general/test_container_disk_vm.py,
      tests/infrastructure/instance_types/supported_os/test_rhel_os.py,
      tests/install_upgrade_operators/csv/test_csv.py)
      to utilities/storage.py, utilities/hco.py, utilities/infra.py, and
      utilities/virt.py.
    • Exceptions raised in pytest_sessionstart block ALL runs (including smoke).
      Distinguish a universal session-bootstrap failure from targeted test regression
      coverage — do not conflate the two when setting the smoke decision.
  8. Gating test impact: Intersect the affected set from step 6 with gating-marked tests.
    Run: rg -l '@pytest.mark.gating' tests/
    Set True if a gating-marked file also appears in the affected set from 6b-6e.
    Utilities/libs changes often affect gating tests without affecting smoke tests.
    Do NOT stop analysis after concluding Run smoke tests: False.

Output rules:
Do NOT include analysis step numbers (1-8) in your visible output.

Your deliverable:
Your inline informational comment will be based on the following requirements:

Test Execution Plan

  • Run smoke tests: True / False — If True, state the dependency path (test → fixture → changed symbol). True ONLY with a verified path.
  • Run gating tests: True / False — If True, state the dependency path. True if any gating-marked test is in the affected set.
  • Affected tests to run (required when utilities/, libs/, or shared conftest changes — list concrete paths even when smoke is False)

Use these formats:

  • path/to/test_file.py - When the entire test file needs verification
  • path/to/test_file.py::TestClass::test_method - When specific test(s) needed
  • path/to/test_file.py::test_function - When specific test(s) needed
  • -m marker - When a marker covers multiple affected tests (e.g. -m gating only if ALL gating tests in scope need run)
  • Tag each listed test or group with its marker when not obvious, e.g. (gating) or (smoke)

Real test commands (MANDATORY when changes affect session/runtime code):

When the affected code runs at session/collection time (conftest fixtures, pytest plugins,
config hooks, session-scoped setup) or modifies runtime behavior that unit tests mock away,
you MUST include concrete pytest commands the PR author must run on a real cluster
to verify the change works end-to-end. Include:

  • A command for the error/fix path (the scenario the PR fixes)
  • A command for the happy path (regression: the normal case still works)
  • Use lightweight tests (e.g., --collect-only for startup failures,
    a single small test for runtime behavior)
    If the PR only changes test logic (not utilities/libs/conftest), the affected test
    paths themselves serve as the real test commands — no separate section needed.

Example output for a session-startup fix:

**Real tests (cluster required)**
Error path (the fix):
`pytest tests/storage/.../test_foo.py --storage-class-matrix=nonexistent-sc --collect-only`
Expected: ValueError with clear message, not IndexError

Happy path (regression):
`pytest tests/storage/.../test_foo.py --storage-class-matrix=<valid-sc> -k test_bar`
Expected: session starts normally

Guidelines:

  • Include tests affected directly OR via fixture setup/teardown, yield from cleanup, or transitive utility call chains (caller calls modified helper)
  • Use a full file path only if ALL tests in that file require verification
  • Use file path + test name when only specific tests use an affected fixture or utility wrapper (preferred for partial file impact)
  • If a test marker can cover multiple files/tests, provide the marker
  • Balance coverage vs over-testing - Keep descriptions minimal
  • Example: if leaf helper foo() changes, include tests whose fixture teardown calls wrapper bar() where bar() calls foo(), even when the test body only imports an unrelated symbol from the same utilities module

Hardware-Related Checks (SR-IOV, GPU, DPDK):

When PR modifies fixtures for hardware-specific resources:

  • Collection Safety: Fixtures MUST have existence checks (return None when hardware unavailable)
  • Test Plan: MUST verify both WITH and WITHOUT hardware:
    • Run affected tests on cluster WITH hardware
    • Verify collection succeeds on cluster WITHOUT hardware

CRITICAL WORKFLOW COMPLETION RULES:

When responding to this test execution plan request, you MUST follow these rules EXACTLY:

  1. YOUR ONLY DELIVERABLE: Post one non-blocking inline comment containing the test execution plan on the first changed line.
    Use comments[].body for the inline review comment; leave the top-level PR thread body empty.
  2. THEN STOP IMMEDIATELY - Do NOT generate any additional response
  3. FALLBACK ONLY: If inline comment API calls fail after retrying, post as a regular PR comment.
    If the /test-plan trigger fails with HTTP 403 due to token scopes, reply in the PR comment thread.
  4. SILENCE = SUCCESS: After successfully submitting the review, your task is complete. No confirmation needed.

ABSOLUTE PROHIBITIONS (violating these creates empty/meaningless reviews):

  • ❌ Do NOT post acknowledgment messages like "Test execution plan posted", "Review posted successfully", "I've successfully posted"
  • ❌ Do NOT mention review IDs, URLs, or confirmation of posting in the PR thread
  • ❌ Do NOT add any follow-up comments after submitting the review
  • ❌ Do NOT reply to confirm task completion
  • ❌ Do NOT explain what you did - just do it and stop
  • ❌ Do NOT use REQUEST_CHANGES for test execution plans; always use the non-blocking COMMENT flow

Remember: The pull request review is visible to users. Additional comments are redundant noise.

CRITICAL — Verification rules for smoke and gating decisions:
- For each True decision, you must have traced a concrete path: test file → fixture → utility function → modified symbol.
- Do NOT assume impact based on scope, file proximity, or infrastructure-sounding names.
Only set True when you trace a concrete path through steps 6a-6e, then 7 or 8.
WRONG: "utilities/hco.py changed → run smoke" (no traced dependency path)
WRONG: "Run smoke tests: False" with no affected-test list when gating tests use the changed utility
RIGHT: "Run smoke tests: False, Run gating tests: True" plus tests/.../test_foo.py::TestBar::test_baz (gating)
RIGHT: "Smoke test X uses fixture Y → wrapper Z → changed function W in utilities/hco.py"

## Test Execution Plan

- **Run smoke tests: False** — The smoke inventory returned six test files. No traced caller of a changed CBT symbol reaches those tests or their ancestor fixtures. No `utilities/`, `libs/`, or session hook changed.
- **Run gating tests: False** — The gating inventory returned test files. None reaches the changed CBT symbols. The affected tests have no gating marker.

### Affected tests to run

New automation (`tier3`):
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestConcurrentBackups::test_concurrent_backups_push_mode`
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestConcurrentBackups::test_concurrent_backups_pull_mode`

Existing pull-mode regressions (`tier2`, implicit):
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestFullBackup::test_full_backup_pull_mode`
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestIncrementalBackup::test_incremental_backup_pull_mode`
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestMultipleIncrementalBackups::test_multiple_incremental_backups_pull_mode`
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestMultipleDiskBackup::test_backup_multiple_disks_pull_mode`
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestBackupAfterLiveMigration::test_incremental_backup_after_live_migration_pull_mode` (`special_infra`, `rwx_default_storage`; requires RWX storage and two workers)

Existing Windows pull-mode regressions (`tier3`, `windows`, `high_resource_vm`, `special_infra`):
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestWindowsVMFullBackup::test_windows_vm_full_backup_pull_mode`
- `tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestWindowsVMIncrementalBackup::test_windows_vm_incremental_backup_pull_mode`

**Why these tests:** Existing pull tests use `ready_pull_backup_chain` or `ready_pull_backup_after_live_migration`. Both fixtures call `wait_for_pull_backup_export_deleted` in `finally`. Incremental setup also reaches that helper through `delete_cbt_pull_backup_and_wait_for_export`. Export-deletion timeouts now raise `RuntimeError` instead of continuing silently.

The concurrent tests use new function-scoped VM, tracker, PVC, and backup fixtures. VM setup depends on module-scoped `cbt_hco_configured` and `storage_class_name_scope_module`. Both backup fixtures call `write_incremental_data_for_concurrent_vms` → `concurrent_backup_type`. Push cleanup uses `ExitStack`. Pull cleanup uses `finally` → `delete_cbt_pull_backups_and_wait_for_exports` → `wait_for_pull_backup_export_deleted`. VM, tracker, and PVC cleanup uses context managers. No `yield from` wrapper adds another affected caller.

### Real tests (cluster required)

Use the normal cluster configuration and applicable storage-class matrix variants. Provide capacity for five RHEL 9 VMs and five backup/staging PVCs. Source disks use the matrix storage class. Backup/staging PVCs use the configured default storage class.

**Collection**
```bash
uv run pytest tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestConcurrentBackups --collect-only -q
```
Expected: Both automated methods collect for each configured storage variant. The storage-class matrix resolves through the class-level `usefixtures` marker.

**Concurrent success path**
```bash
uv run pytest \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestConcurrentBackups::test_concurrent_backups_push_mode \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestConcurrentBackups::test_concurrent_backups_pull_mode \
  -v
```
Expected:
- Three preparatory full backups reach completion/export readiness before new guest data is written.
- Preparatory pull exports disappear before staging PVC reuse.
- Each concurrent wave creates all five backup resources before waiting for that wave.
- Push backups reach `Complete=True`. Pull backups reach `Progressing=True` with reason `ExportReady`.
- Each wave contains three `Incremental` backups and two `Full` backups. All include the boot disk.
- Teardown deletes backups and pull exports, then releases dependent resources. The HCO configuration is restored at module teardown.

**Happy-path regression**
```bash
uv run pytest \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestFullBackup::test_full_backup_pull_mode \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestIncrementalBackup::test_incremental_backup_pull_mode \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestMultipleIncrementalBackups::test_multiple_incremental_backups_pull_mode \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestMultipleDiskBackup::test_backup_multiple_disks_pull_mode \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestBackupAfterLiveMigration::test_incremental_backup_after_live_migration_pull_mode \
  -v
```
Expected: Export deletion succeeds during staging PVC reuse, before migration, and during teardown. Normal cleanup does not raise the new timeout error.

On a Windows-capable cluster:
```bash
uv run pytest \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestWindowsVMFullBackup::test_windows_vm_full_backup_pull_mode \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestWindowsVMIncrementalBackup::test_windows_vm_incremental_backup_pull_mode \
  -v
```
Expected: Both Windows backup paths retain successful export cleanup.

**Error/fix path — controlled disposable cluster only**
```bash
uv run pytest \
  tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py::TestConcurrentBackups::test_concurrent_backups_pull_mode \
  -v -s
```
This command alone does not inject a failure. In a controlled run, arrange for one concurrent-wave export to remain present beyond the deletion timeout. Expected: teardown reports `RuntimeError` inside `ExceptionGroup`, attempts cleanup for every tracked backup, and attempts every export wait. Repeat with a backup cleanup that returns false or raises. Also verify cleanup after setup fails with at least one tracked backup deployed. Remove fault-injection changes and leaked resources after the run. The diff has no dedicated automated fault-injection test.

### Scope and traceability

The two methods replace existing manual STD placeholders. Each retains its direct STP link and now has executable assertions without manual suppression. The description contains meaningful motivation. The five-VM mixed-backup setup matches the STP concurrent scenario's backup-success portion. Pull coverage ends at export readiness; this does not prove data integrity or restore success. Restore coverage remains tracked under CNV-95473.

This plan uses existing repository guidance for non-blocking test plans and the five-VM `tier3` classification. It does not clear the separately saved blocking STP coverage check. Cluster tests and collection have not been executed by this analysis.

Learning: In RedHatQE/openshift-virtualization-tests, the Python pytest class TestConcurrentBackups in tests/storage/cbt/test_cbt.py uses tier3 because it boots five RHEL 9 VMs and runs backups on all five. This resource requirement justifies tier3 rather than tier2; do not recommend tier2 solely to match the STP classification.

@dalia-frank No additional inline code fix is outstanding from my review. All review threads are resolved. The title already includes [Storage], and I found your confirmation that all CBT tests passed.

These items still need attention:

  • HIGH — Saved STP coverage blocker: The saved assessment requires coverage or scenario-specific exclusions with follow-up Jira links for enable/disable, forced full backup, certificate enforcement, recovery, hotplug, migration/checkpoint coverage, and backup/migration exclusion. The current description only defers restore coverage to CNV-95473. This assessment needs re-evaluation against the focused concurrent-backup scope; I have not cleared it.
  • Review status: The CodeRabbit check passed, but GitHub still reports CHANGES_REQUESTED. Resolved threads do not automatically clear that review state. A different reviewer can request @coderabbitai approve; the workflow must then verify approval eligibility and required checks.
  • CI status: can-be-merged failed, and build-container remains queued. Check the merge-check details and the queued build before merging.

I have not changed the approval state or PR contents.

@jpeimer No additional code fix is outstanding from my earlier review. The current checks now pass, including build-container, can-be-merged, tox, DCO, and security checks. All supplied Signed-off-by: trailers have a non-empty full name and email.

The saved HIGH STP coverage blocker still needs re-evaluation against this PR’s concurrent-backup scope. Passing CI does not clear that assessment.

I can submit your approval request for the workflow to check readiness. GitHub currently reports CHANGES_REQUESTED; approval is not yet confirmed.

@jpeimer Thanks for the link. You confirmed CNV-95473 as the follow-up Jira.

I could not retrieve its contents, so verification is inconclusive. Please paste the relevant description or acceptance criteria so I can check which deferred scenarios it covers.

The saved HIGH STP coverage assessment remains unresolved pending that check. This does not establish an additional code defect in this focused PR. I have not changed the approval state.

@dalia-frank Based on my earlier review, I have no additional code fix to request. Two items remain:

  • HIGH — Saved STP coverage assessment: This remains unresolved. Verification of CNV-95473 was inconclusive because I could not retrieve its contents. Please paste its description or acceptance criteria so the assessment can be re-evaluated against this PR’s concurrent-backup scope. Missing Jira evidence does not establish another code defect.
  • Approval restriction: I cannot approve in response to the PR author’s request under the current configuration. Ask another reviewer, such as @jpeimer, to post @coderabbitai approve. Alternatively, a maintainer can enable reviews.auto_approvals.allow_author_approval.

I have not changed the approval state. I have not rechecked the current CI or provider approval status in this reply.
